I have 2 transmissions staring at me, actually 4 but one is still on a 1800 motor and one is still in a wrecked '81 spider...is there any way to tell if one of the 2 came from 1979 Brava as one of the motors I have is a 2 L from a 1979 Brava and my other 2 are 1800's, and a 2 L that is still in wrecked 81
For the life of me I can't remember if I put both the motor and transmission from Brava into my spider 20 years ago or just the motor...I do remember looking up what had to be done to put transmission in spider but can't remember if I actually did it
and another question...will a 5 speed from a 1981 Spider (transmission has 23k miles) bolt on a '79 2L (my Brava motor)
any ideas? my goal is to put one of the 4 transmissions (I will rebuild as needed) on my 79 brava motor, which is going in a 76 Spider
there will be a quiz later
which transmission??

Re: which transmission??
is a Brava 2L different than a 124 2L? if a 124 with 1608 is travelling at 55mph westbound on I-84 and a 1979 Brava with 2l is cruising at 65...
But really, is the Brava motor/trans different or preferable in some way?

Re: which transmission??
I've read that the 131 trannies are much stronger/better in some ways, but a fair amount of modification needs to be done. I believe shifter position mainly.

Re: which transmission??
A brave engine and spider are the same in every way if you have a 79 brava and a 79 spider the same engine
same bolts engine will bolt right up to either tranny. Is the Brava tranny tough? yes! I used to beat the hell out of
mine back in the day. To make it fit in a spider is work and you might be wasting your time? youll need to use a
Automatic drive shaft right off the output ( the first shaft) cut your tranny tunnel allow a little more room
for the larger bell housing and make a rear tranny mount. I haven't made this transplant yet and i might not
go forward with the 131 tranny for a number of reasons. But ive raced 131s and know them well also built and
worked on many spiders.
The 78 and earlier model spiders or 131s also shared the same 1800 engines.
Hope I helped some good luck with your project.

Re: which transmission??
I was told by someone who used to race that the 131 transmission is stronger, but it shifts like a truck compared to a 124 tranny and requires tunnel modifications to fit. I decided to stick with a 124 transmission for these reasons.

Re: which transmission??
then the question would be...are you going to end up in Portland, OR(my neighborhood) or Dunmore, PA?...appreciate the reference to a road we drive almost everyday, though it is a lousy drivegeorgeramos wrote:is a Brava 2L different than a 124 2L? if a 124 with 1608 is travelling at 55mph westbound on I-84 and a 1979 Brava with 2l is cruising at 65...

Re: which transmission??
you must have mixed up things. 131 transmission is more precise when shifting than 124's and shifts as smooth as 124's
Re: which transmission??
I would say out of all the 131s and 124s ive owned the 124 tranny is smoother but thats my 2 cents...djape1977 wrote:you must have mixed up things. 131 transmission is more precise when shifting than 124's and shifts as smooth as 124's
