Hey guys, question about the late model coolant T, they have the one side that's got a real small opening like this.
Is this useful or beneficial? Seems like it would block more air in, but maybe by holding it there it doesn't prevent the coolant from flowing?

that is the thermostat side. I suspect it is to restrict the amount of flow thru the engine while the stat is closed allowing the motor to warm up faster.

Oh, that makes sense. Seems like it would block in air between the thermostat and itself.
If I have a vise or drill press I'd probably try drilling it out to let air through. Or if I have a cutoff wheel I'd cut that part off.
I have none of those those so if I change it then I'll just deal with it.

Of course. I probably wouldn't actually mess with it if I had the means, but still curious what it's for. I guess restrict the flow with stat closed is the answer.

Years ago I was in the habit of removing the thermostat during the summer. I thought this would help the car run cooler. Then I had 1966 Pontiac and when I removed the thermostat the car overheated. After some research I found the water pumps can circulate the water through the radiator too fast for it to be cooled. The thermostat in the car restricted the flow. The additional time it takes for the water to pass through the radiator allows more heat to be removed from the water.
I think the size of the hole in the "T" determines the rate the water flows through the radiator once the thermostat is fully opened.
If everything is the cooling system remains stock it should work.
