Trans oil

Post by paintdudeluke »

The gear lube indicated is 80-90 (not EP) which would be GL1. I used full synthetic 75-90 (valvoline synpower). I'm assuming that any modern synthetic oil is far superior to anything available back then. Any feedback? The EP (extreme pressure) component back then was containing corrosive ingredients to brass and copper components. I imagine there's nothing caustic in modern synthetic. There isn't even a GL1 on the shelf, everything says "exceeds GL5" or something like that.

What do you guys fill your 5sp trans with?

Pennzoil Synchromesh. And you can get GL-1 from NAPA, among others. The modern synthetics are not suitable, as far as I know.

Went to my local NAPA store.
They had 5 1-gallon jugs on the shelf.
I didn't even have to ask one of the incompetent 20-somethings working there, if they had it.

A question like this on Mirafiori would cause a firestorm of argument. Anyway, I regularly use Redline MtL to no ill effect and you don't have to wait for it to warm up in cold weather as it has the consistency of ATF. The only problem I'm aware of is if you have questionable seals the stuff may leak out. The Haynes manual recommends 20/50 Castrol GTX which I have also used.
