Why do you have to remove the aux. pulley? The cover encloses all the pulleys. The timing marks are on the (usually yellow) cover, near the green wire cover in this photo:
What shop manual do you have? This procedure is pretty basic
Baltobernie,
Wow, you are write the timming marks are on the cover, how did I mess that one up? Any rate, no worries I couldn't get the Aux. pulley of anyway the p.o.'s mechanic didn't use the correct washer, the one with the flat tab, and he must have glued it back on. I think I need to replace the timming belt tensioner bearing, mine is all rusted and doesn't rotate very freely. I have a belt that was in the box of goodies that was in the trunk, it is a Gates 5004-41144 x 3/4", is this the correct belt? It is a very tight fit.
Thanks again for the help, I'll get it figured out.

Unless you're positive that belt has never been used, order a new one along with the tensioner bearing. All the vendors that you see mentioned on this site stock these two items.
Baltobernie,
Yes it is new, it was still in the original package (it has 144 teeth). However, I search the net and even the Gates website to see if it is the correct belt and I got no hits, apparently Gates no longer makes the timming belt for the Fiat DOHC. So, just to be sure I'll get one from AutoRicambi plus the bearing. I do have a question what is the best way to remove the old bearing from the bracket? There is no hurry still dealing with a title issue.
Thanks for the info, you prevented a big headache.

Ok, I aligned it all up acoording to the diagram and put the new belt on, changed the plugs and wires, although the wires are to short for #3 and #4 and they barely reach. It started up but was real shakey and would not hold an idle. I let it warm up a little, a few minutes, and it still would not idle. So I know I messed up the timming somewhere. The crank mark was at 5* BTDC, the aux pully was pointing to the bearing bracket bolt, and the cam wheels were spot on to the indicators. Where did I go wrong?
I guess I'll read how to time it again and start over.
Thanks Pesto

There is a lot more to making it run right then just the cam timing. If you are sure you have cam timing right, move on to other things. Have you checked compression??
Well, It appears the belt that came with all the extra stuff may not be a good fit, which may be the reason it was in the trunk and not on the car. I think the spacing of the teeth may be a little off, the old belt slips right on and off lining up perfectly. I would use the old belt but is has two small splits in it. I am ordering a new one and we'll see what happens.
As for the other things like compression I had no reason to suspect those due to it ran well, besides the back fire problem. I guess I'll check that after I get the new belt. I'll have to get a compression check tool . The tools to work on this are costing me more than the actual parts, LOL
Thanks for the input it is appriciated.

Baltobernie,
The distributor cap is block mounted and points a little away from the block. I am going to see if I can get a set of wires that are longer. No I am not using the Gates belt, I started it and noticed right away things were not correct. I ordered a Pirelli belt from Bayless-Midwest, and old school points and condensor from AutoRicambi (replacing fuse box too, I posted that problem in electrical issues).
Thanks for your help
