It would be a shame to use a Mazda platform. Why not keep it purely Fiat, like the original?

I know, I know: economics.

But, really? An MX-5 base? Good God, no thanks!

Although Mazda has a below average quality rating according to JD Powers, Fiat is second to last, with almost twice as many defects per 100 cars as the best (Porsche). The MX-5 was the JD Power car of the year in it's class - so it appears to be one of the better Mazdas.

Given that I can think of worse strategies than using the MX-5 as a base.

If it goes onto the 500 platform it could look like this... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0og3ESpf2Y

I do prefer the concept that SoFlaFiat posted above. 8)

Tom Tjaarda is still around. It would be interesting to hear if he has (or wants) a hand in the next-generation Fiat Spider.

I for one would love to see Tom Tjaarda involved in a revised spider!! He is living in Italy if I remember correctly! I would love to see a new and an old parked in my driveway!!

God help us. Thankfully pininfarina doesn't design cars any more.

Also, these cars were never "affordable" by any stretch, and by the end of their run were about $40k in today's dollars. And if FIAT really wanted to make a tribute car it would need to have a service network of maybe 10 dealerships in the whole country.

As a former MX5 owner, they couldn't find a better platform on which to revive the Spider. They are dead nuts reliable and have fantastic handling characteristics. There is a reason that many publications rate them in their ''Greatest of all Time'' lists! If that car shown above on the MX5 platform was available,I would sell my bike and BMW and snap one up.

Brad is trolling again.

While I agree with you Brad, the Pininfarina designs are not as nice or graceful as those of a Chevy truck, the prices have always been a bargain.

When I bought my new 71 spider it was only $3,600 with a 1608. The 71 1438 was $3,400.

Soooo, what are they designing Brad? Toasters and chainsaws?

The trolling worked
