What is this?
Is this just another fuel filter? I am replacing my fuel pump, so I am replacing all inline fuel filters. The piece in the photo is inline before the fuel pump and there is an inline filter between the pump and carb. It says "Made in Italy". Thanks for the help in advance.

not familiar with that part but can only think it is a fuel pressure regulator.

I hate people who guess, but I'm gonna guess anyway, just cause I can. On manay cars, there is an item in the fuel line like that called a pulsator, it is to help control fuel presure pulsing. There, I guessed.

it is a 1 way check valve, check it by blowing thru it in both directions, it is put in the fuel line to prevent the fuel from running all the way back to the tank, causing a much longer crank time, pumping the fuel back to the carb. this was not a guess

Thanks for guessing guys. Apparently it is a one way check valve. Should I replace it? I did blow through it from both ends and there seems to be resistance, which I assume it should have, although my car is having a fuel delivery issue and that's why I'm replacing the fuel pump.

Does it blow thru both ways?? If it does, and if indeed it is a check valve, it is bad. Replace it?? Why?? Because you don't know what it is or how it works?? Not a good reason to replace it. What sort of fuel issue you having?? Guessing again, but that piece is NOT your problem.
Are we talking electric or mechanical pump??

The Mystery Deepens........ you see, mechanical pump already have a check valve built into pump. But pulsators (my guess) are on electric high pressure systems. I suppose it could be a redundant check valve.
Again, what sort of issue are you having?? Don't make us guess.

I have had my 78 for a year now. When I bought it the car ran. I have done very basic things to it that I have done to previous old American vehicles I've had. New brakes, wheel bearings, oil change, shocks,tires and just went over the car. I started driving it in April of '13 and it has been fun and run great. In July of '13 it was running fine when I left my shop and no less than a block later it died. Luckily, for me, 2 friends pulled up before I could unbuckle to lift the hood. I removed the top of the air filter and one of the guys, who thinks he knows about cars, started moving the accelerator linkage and saying,"You're not getting fuel". So, we pushed it back to my shop. Over the next 3 months I would try to start it as it sat there. Sometimes it would start and run, but the next day it wouldn't. I went through this for 9 weeks. It would start, it wouldn't start. One day it started and I drove it home to my garage. I live within 3 miles of about everything I do in KCMO.
I have an electronic fuel pump, but thought I would like to keep the car original. People tell me to get an electronic ignition and it will solve all my problems, but all I have is no fuel. Oh and the car starts if I pour gas in the carb.

Now I'm confused (happens a lot) a few posts above you said mechanical pump. Now you say you have electric?? Which is it?
If car starts w fuel poured in, obviously ign not an issue. Good on ya.

I bought an electric when I suspected the fuel pump but I have not installed it. I have a mechanical one coming tomorrow. Decided to replace the mechanical fuel pump with a new mechanical one.

So have you tested anything?? Removed fuel line from carb and cranked engine?? Changing things on a whim is a sure way to overcomplicate a simple problem.
If indeed it is the pump, yes, stick with mechanical.
Back to that funny pictured valve, can you blow thru it?? Will it pass fuel??

What would removing the fuel line to the carb and cranking the engine do? I will have to go home and blow in the thing pictured and report back. Thanks.

Removing fuel line from carb and cranking engine will show if fuel is getting up to carb and roughly how much. You may wish to stick fuel line into plastic container as you crank, this help prevent mess and fire. Crank for 4-5 seconds. Let us know what happens.
IF no fuel come from hose, still LOTS of things can cause no fuel. Fuel pump is ONE of those things.
First things first, see if fuel is getting to carb.
Make sure you can blow thru that mystery valve.
