Never mind..What Engines fit in a 1970 124 Sport Spider?

Post by JScottM »

Currently the car has a 1438cc, that needs a rebuild. Since I have to the pull the motor, I am considering upgrading to a 1608 or 1800cc? Need some advice. Can the current transmission bolt up to the 1608 and 1800 or do I need to get the whole package.
Do both the 1608 and 1800 fit fairly easily into the body. mounts, etc? Any advice, thoughts, tips, are much appreciated.

Just found the "Swapping my 1438 for a 2L in my 68" post from a week ago that pretty much answers all my questions.

The tranny willl work with a different bellhousing. you need one from a 71 or newer spider or coupe.

Either of those engines will have more torque than the 1438, so will feel more powerful. You should not have any trouble with hood clearance as long as you stay away from the 2000. Even that is doable, but space is quite limited and you may have to play with engine mount heighs.
