Thoughts on using sealant for intake

Post by johndemar »

I have to replace the intake gasket because of a coolant leak from the center port and was wondering if a sealant would be of any benefit?
The problem was most likely caused from using a "new" replacement gasket that I purchased as a kit from Art Bayless in the early 80's  The fact that the cardboard container from the kit was crumbling should have given me a clue to not use it, but it held up for a few years.

The intake and head are the original match and the surface was true when I put them together during the restoration.

I was thinking of using something like Permatex Hylomar Universal Blue. I only want to do this once.

I used RTV gasket material on both sides of my intakes when I intalled the twin IDF's and have no regrets in doing so.
Good luck

Permatex RTV instructions state "not for use when in contact with gasoline"

RTV is gas soluable, and should not be used on intakes, carb base etc. It is the most popular product for people to spread all over everything.

When bolting a flat, machined surface to another flat, machined surface, w a gasket between, sealer should not be required, gasket alone should be fine. if you wish to seal around coolant port, go for it, but use a tiny bit of whatever you choose.
