Coming Home

Post by red107 »

Well folks, we finally got our date to leave Okinawa Japan. We will be leaving on June 8. A Family of 5 and a 12 year old chocolate lab. Going to be a long day. We have a 3 hour flight to mainland Japan, 3 hour layover there. 8-9 hour flight to San Francisco, 4 hour layover there. 5 hour flight to D.C. Arriving at midnight.Renting a van and driving to Dover Delaware to pick up our cars. Spend a few days in Dover to adjust to the time difference. Then driving to Swansboro NC where we will reside for the next 2-3 years. Around the 23rd of June I am traveling to Jacksonville Florida to pick up my toys. Anybody know a great auto shipper? Need to ship my 81 fiat and 02 Jeep Wrangler. I had some quotes online to ship both cars for $1052.00. The distance is about 500 miles.

Leaving Okinawa is always a bittersweet experience. I still miss Bikuri Donkey, Fab Curry near the Sea Wall, American Village, Ryukyu Mura, Onna Station, Okuma, Yomitan Pottery Village, Expo Park, Jack's Place, Onna Glass Factory, and the myriad of festivals like the Orion Beerfest, the Cherry Blossom Festival and so much more.

I'm sure you've seen this before, but this was one of my favorite places to visit:

I'm currently shipping a car from NC to AZ, and I used http://www.shipacardirect.com/. Currently a good experience, but I only just arranged it yesterday. Waiting for the car to be picked up.

These guys (and uship.com as someone else mentioned) are brokers.. You might be able to find ashipping company directly, but I found that harder.

I used http://www.transportreviews.com/ and yelp as my way of choosing who to use.

Thanks for the input. I used Uship and that's where I got the quote of 1050.00 for both. I will look at others.

Depends on whether you want covered or uncovered, co-shipped or single shipped.

Doesn't sound such a bad quote if it's covered!

They will be shipped together. The quote was for both of them but uncovered. I would prefer the fiat go covered . The Jeep can go uncovered.

coming out of florida, back to the NC area you should be able to get cheaper than that. Florida is a tourist state so there is a lot of freight going in, but not much product from industry coming out so there are a lot of drivers looking for loads. with that said, you should be able to find a regular trucking company (18 wheeler van) to bring your cars back. most trailers have logistic post that locking straps will secure your car. all you need is a pick up and delivery point that has a dock that can be accessed with a car.

i brought a car down from Rhode Island to Georgia no problem. i had a friend who worked at Old Dominion and for the cost of a pizza, he let me drive my car on his cross dock and right onto the trailer i had contracted. the carrier happened to be located in the next town from where i live in Georgia, so i just met the driver at his terminal where they had a dock and unloaded it and drove it twenty miles home.
