Dirty Engine !!

Post by mailyohan »

Hello all,

I got this car and it would not start.
the belt were stuck and the pulleys did not turn. We took the belt out and the cam shafts turn fine but the crank pulley was stuck.

Can someone tell me whats wrong with this engine? any help is much appreciated.

I'd say the rings are rusted to the cylinder walls

I purchased a 1980 Spider that had been sitting for 15 years. The engine was frozen.
I took out the spark pugs poured a little transmission oil in each cylinder and let it sit for a couple weeks. Then put the car in 4th gear and hand pushed it forward by had rocking the car. It broke free. So I installed new spark plugs.
Drained the gas, Flushed out fuel, replaced pick-up in distributor
Car started and now has about 5000 miles on it. It burns around a quart of oil every 2000 miles.
After it was running I replaced timing belt and seals etc. before putting it on the road.

I know I was lucky

I'd say there is also rust stuck to the cylinder walls. I'm not sure I'd even try to turn this one over, at the very least (if you can get it to turn) do a quick honing before powering it up. With ones that look like this the seals, etc., are typically so bad that the motor has to come out anyway, so might as well get the machine work done on the bores, measure the bearing surfaces and repair, etc.

Or just get a known good engine from another car!

if you do try to run it, run 20:1 premix for the first gallon to lube it up.

does it move at all? could be caught on the auxiliary shaft... when i got my first basketcase, i couldn't get it to turn over until i put so much pressure on it that it broke the auxiliary shaft. after that it turned over no problem...
