79 Spider not starting just clicking

Post by mrrightchicago »

I know this problem has been discussed many times here. I have bought my 1979 Spider 2000 Peninferina few months ago. It is in okay shape but needs some floor panel work, brakes to be bled may be front end as well. I drove it to the gas station and filled it up. I managed to drive and stop but it needs some work. Again parked outside covered, and it was in snow. Last week I started it, and I raised it up almost to 5000 rpm to warm it up. After a few minutes it wont start again. Now as I turn the key, it clicks. Tried to hit on the starter while turning the key but no use. Today it cranked once, tried to jump it with another car, but it wont crank only the clicking sound. A mechanic apparently not know much about all these said as I raised it up the engine might have seized, that is why the starter is unable to crank it. But my question, what is the connection between the starter going bad and revving up the engine. What you all think, is it just the starter or anything more majorI know the used starter cost around $60, but installing is a different story. Thanks very much for your advise and suggestions, I am thinking to sell it off. I would love to work on it and make it work better but dont have the technical know how

sounds like low voltage to the starter. Check the connection at the starter with a voltmeter

I believe it may not be the starter. Couple of weeks ago when it was freezing, it started up but didnt continue running. So I revved up to make the engine warm. It was so cold and freezing and revved up to 5000 rpm. After that engine started one more time but sounded like hitting noise. After that it only clicks. May be the timing belt broken. Will find out pretty soon, I guess
