Replacing my 1438 for a 2L in my 68, Opinions?
Hi all. I'm looking for your valued opinions and experiences.
As much as I want to keep my 68 as original as possible, I have come to the realization that my 1438 ain't what she used to be. It's the original motor, drips a bit, blows a bit (sometimes a little more than a bit) and I'm assuming that after 150k miles, has gotten a little weak. I've thought of having it rebuilt by my buddy/mechanic but it would have to be done in his spare time. The thought of not being able to drive my car during the motor rebuild would suck!
One option he suggested was replacing the 1438 for a rebuilt 2l (carbed) he has in storage. He figures swapping would be a two day/4 cases of beer job This would allow me the pleasure of driving my Spider while we take the time to rebuild my 1438. Canadan knows how I drive and figures once I get the 2l under the hood, I won't want to go back to the 1.4. But will the torque of the 2l have a detrimental effect on my older trans and diff? My other option is to buy more oil and just drive the 1438 until it gets worse, although it doesn't seem to be getting worse.
So if I decide to swap, we figure we will need a different trans bell housing and will have to switch to an elec fuel pump. Distributor might also be an issue (no hood bumps). I was wondering if anyone here has done a similar swap in the past? If so, what problems, opps I meant challenges did you encounter?
Making this decision could be a "what did I get myself into" or result in looking back and saying to myself... self, how did I ever drive that car with that small motor?
Thanking you in advance, I appreciate your help.

Parts are readily available, so I'd not worry much about that. Would be a shame to lose the early hood... You can get a distributorless ignition from mark for pretty cheap... but I think there is more to the hood bumps than that. I saw a 2.0 on a mid 70's car and you could see the impression of the air filter housing on the inner hood lining.
Re: Replacing my 1438 for a 2L in my 68, Opinions?
I've got a 72 that puffs and drips a bit and I drive the crap out of it in the summer. Whats a quart of oil every now and then?? BTW its a 1608.
I don't see why you would need an electric pump if you swapped.
The trans and rear end will hold up fine.
I can just imagine the swap, guy wants to put in electric pump, run some wiring and hang a switch under dash, this won't fit, or will it, change this, mouse that. Personally, I would just drive it if you like it know. I've got a 1438 sitting here I'd like to put into a junker 71 out in shed.
IF done well, IF being the word, obviously the 2l will pull like mad compared to 1438 off the line and will be a neat swap. Your call.

Tx MrJD, I really want to keep my hood, having to change hoods might just be the deal breaker.MrJD wrote:Would be a shame to lose the early hood...
Dan mentioned something about being able to lower the motor slightly...with smaller mounts I guess? Me not knowing.
I'm kinda siding with you on this majicwrench, I don't like driving it, I love driving it.majicwrench wrote:Personally, I would just drive it if you like it ...
I am worried that a few "murphy's laws" would kick in doing the swap. And then I would be spiderless.
Although, I know that Canadan can do it, if he wants to, eventually...

Jim, at what stage are you at in the swap?fiat218 wrote:My 69 is getting a make over, from the 1.4 to a highly modified 2.0 with dual carbs
Obviously, I would value your expertise on the mods you did/will have to do.

Re: Replacing my 1438 for a 2L in my 68, Opinions?
I stuck a 79 carb'd 2L in my 70 flat hood spider. You will need to change the clutch, pressure plate and bell housing. You have some touch issues. With stock mounts you might get a little rub between the pan and the cross-member. Nothing serious. The center hood support will rub just a little on the belt cover. I never modified this as the only result was a little paint and plastic wear. The dizzy will fit tight under the hood and needs to be rotated to get the height to a minimum. You may also need to modify the radiator fan location. The 1438 radiator is much smaller than the 2L radiator, so some fiddling may need to be done there. I used a 70 stock carb and manifold (both intake and exhaust) and had to do some simple machine work on it to plug some of the holes in the 2L block. I did move my battery to the trunk to improve lifespan and help with weight bias. I also re-jetted the carb. Improved both power and economy. Finally, you will need to check air cleaner clearance and some changes may be needed there. The change was the best thing i ever did to the car. But I was never one to bury the tach with the 1438 and appreciated not having to downshift twice to pull a hill.

Tx azruss. A few touch issues doesn't sound too bad. At least I now have an idea of what will need to be done.
Stupid question, was there much of a power/speed difference?
I do like speed
Tx Jim, that's what I thought based on some threads I read.
Your Beek sounds like my Canadan!
Glad there are guys out there like them

I think you'll be disappointed at the effort vs. payback. I have taken several 1438cc engines and installed larger, higher compression pistons, performed mild head work, put in slightly warmed cams, and twin or single performance carburetors and they are a joy to drive. Plus you keep the flat hood and a motor that revs like the devil.
