brake compensator - is it rebuildable?

Post by v6spider »

Just wondering if the brake compensator is rebuildable or if someone has had experience rebuilding one and if it is worth the trouble. I'm getting ready to turn the car back to and upright position I want to make sure I have all bases covered before doing so..

Thanks!

I am not aware that there are rebuild kits for them. A new one is ~$25, so it's hardly worth rebuilding it.

Another vote for Autoracambi. I bought mine from them and it's fine. Installing it, however, is another story.....

I did attempt to disassemble the old one, just out of curiosity. In a word, forgetaboutit!

when installing a new one, make sure that rubber boot is in place and intact. stuff it full of grease.

Just got through installing the compensator from AR. This is a cumbersome job and I recommend taking out the right rear spring and shock before you even get started. The absolute hardest part is getting the boot on after its all together. I thought about just leaving it off, But then I would lose sleep over it thinking about all the dust and road grime getting in there. be careful not to cross thread the brake lines. The compensator is adjustable, but i just set mine to the high flow position, effectively bypassing it. Went ahead and replaced the rear center brake hose while i was at it. It took about 4 hours all in all - 2 hours of that was trying to get the boot on correctly. :x :x :x

I have given this a lot of thought. I am going to remove the stock self adjustable proportioning valve and replace it with an after market one that I will mount in the engine compartment or trunk. As it sits now the arm that attaches to the axle is directly in the way of my 2 1/2" dual exhaust pipe on the passenger side.

I purchased a parts car that had the brake line from the master cylinder rerouted (bent) back to the hose that feeds the rear axle. The fittings are identical. Others purchase a jumper hose that allows the compensator to be removed. So I think you might be ok with out a compensator.

It's only $35 for an adjustable one I think I'd rather have the option than not. I'm also running bigger brakes from an rx7 gsl so even more reason to have adjustability.

The entire point of the compensator is that it dynamically adjusts itself. Also, the mounting hole is slotted, so you can adjust its static position as well. Its just like an aftermarket proportioning valve, except that you get the added benefit of it adjusting itself when the weight over the rear tires is less. So, in my opinion, getting an aftermarket one would only take away from the braking performance.

A minor sacrifice for dual exhaust which is absolutely necessary for my engine to breath properly.

Cheers! :)
