Charcoal canister connection

Keep it on topic, it will make it easier to find what you need.

Well, I can't find a decent breakdown of a 79 carb and emmisions stuff in my books :(

Speaking genericly, the purge system should not be funcioning (purging) at idle. I worked on tons of cars of all makes and models w carb and purge systems, they all either connect the purge to ported vacuum or have some creation somewhere so it doesn't purge at idle. The amount of fuel vapors coming from the canister can vary greatly depending on how long car has ran, how hot it was last time parked etc etc. This varying amount of fuel/air can really mess with idle mixture. So they don't purge at idle, and start to purge as you open throttle. Off idle/cruising the little bit of fuel/air from purge will not make much diff.

If you can hook line to a ported vacuum source you will be better off.
And if it is sucking directly from tank or bowl w engine running you are wasting a lot of fuel.

Again, this is the way all cars---that I have seen-- work. They use diff devices to accomplish this. Nex time I see a stock 79ish fiat I will take a look and see how they do it.

Most everything has valves which open when engine off to allow vapors into canister. Then they shut when engine running. Otherwise you suck directly from tank or carb.

I hooked up the vapor line wrong once and sucked from the vapor line into the carburetor which caused the tank to collapse upon itself. I then used compressed air to blow it back out.

I was trying to identify a canister part I just removed from the car...all hoses were cracked and/or broken off except for one that went to the intake. below is the link to the canister and where it was located. is this the same thing?

That doesn't look like the charcoal canister on my car is all I can say for sure. Mine is plastic and rectangular shaped like in the cartoon drawing I posted. Mine was positioned on the drivers side (left side). Maybe someone else can say for sure if it is or isn't . Sorry I can't be more help that that.

Early cans are circular (like your picture), late cans are plastic (rectangular).

At the bottom of the canister there was a hose that ran to the firewall and switched over to a hard line that ran across the firewall and through a hole on the drivers side. I lost it from there, but the hose was cracked and splitting. so what ever it was designed to be used for wasn't working or hooked up properly.

Thanks
