You know that Fiat smell inside?

Post by spidernut »

I removed the rest of the carpet, pad and tar coating from my project Spider tonight. In doing so, I found the source of that Fiat interior smell...the padding and tar coating really smells like a mix of jute and mold. When I'm done, it won't smell like a Fiat any longer. :) :) :)

Hmm.
I just re-upholstered my front and rear (package shelf) seats.
That Fiat smell has disappeared with the new upholstery being installed.
I actually liked the old Fiat smell and I hope it magically comes back.
I don't know if most of the smell comes from the old seat vinyl, but I can definitely say that the new upholstery has eliminated the smell.
Maybe this is temporary and the familiar old Fiat smell will return after some time passes. I hope so, anyway.
It's definitely part of the charm of these cars.
BTW, old VW Beetles have a unique smell as well. It is different from the Fiat's. But it is a classic smell.

That is very kind of you ...... I think? :|
Good thing your response is on the Fiat forum and we all know what you are offering for me to come over and smell.

my grounds up with fresh paint everywhere, new door panels, plastic dash and consoles, carpet and underlayment, seats, and "clean" wiring, no engine and tranny leaks, different exhaust has virtually eliminated that smell. For sure, the "old" smell is gone. I have noticed the last couple of times i started the car, a little of the smell has returned.

I would have bet the house that this thread had something to do with the smell of gas, not the interior! :o

Umm, what is "jute"?

Jute is a long, soft, shiny vegetable fiber that can be spun into coarse, strong threads. It is produced from plants in the genus Corchorus, which was once classified with the family Tiliaceae, more recently with Malvaceae, and has now been reclassified as belonging to the family Sparrmanniaceae. "Jute" is the name of the plant or fiber that is used to make burlap, Hessian or gunny cloth.

Jute - it's that stuff that's under the factory installed carpet. Padding. And what Spidernut said
