Spark Plugs 1 foul - 3 good.

Post by adrians »

Hi All,

I'm having an ongoing problem with cylinder 2 fouling the spark plug.

I wanted to check what brands and/or model plugs other people are using.

I'm using NGK BPR6ES with a .7mm gap, in a 1981 F.I. Spider.

Thinking of using a hotter plug NGK BPR5ES ?

Any suggestions ?

I have found plugs with dual electrodes help with fouling.

hotter plug likely won't help, gotta find out what is fouling the plug and fix that

Mark is right. If it is the same cylinder that fouls when you replace the plugs, then it is not the plugs. Check the plug wire on the cylinder, or just replace that wire alone and see if that fixes it.

Have now replaced everything, plugs, leads, dizzy cap, rotor, pickup, ign. module, only thing left is the head and valves.

Will go for a long run this weekend if it's not to hot !

Sounds like the valve seal has gone kapuut on the intake side.

Thanks Brad, that's what I'm was hoping wasn't the problem.

The engine was rebuilt 4 years ago, but we didn't do new valves.

If it blows a little smoke when you first start it then its the seals; if it blows when running and fouls plugs then it might be the seal or might be a ring. Hopefully just a valve seal, it isn't particularly hard to do, you'll replace the head gasket, timing belt, all of the head seals and gaskets. I usually order a few extra valve seals - I tend to ruin a couple installing them - and replace all 8 valves with new ones. When everything is apart clean the head up real good.

I would doubt it just being a valve seal, but one can always hope. Typically valve seal issues cause some smoke, but do not let enough oil in to foul plugs. Hotter plug MIGHT make a difference if you have no other option at the moment, but like was said, it has a problem that needs to be fixed at some point.
