How to Spend Your Superbowl Day

I'm not a football fan (though I was in the past), so I spend part of the morning rekeying my glove box lock and trunk lock to match the key that fits my door locks. I installed the trunk lock, lubed everything and it works like a champ! Since I didn't have a key that fit any of the locks, I was quite pleased to be able to use something other than a screwdriver to open the trunk!

I don't have my Spider yet (I'm waiting until March when the salt is off the roads for a final test drive before paying the balance of it) so excuse me if this sounds like an obvious question.

Would a 1974 spider have the same keys for the trunk and the door and the glove box as standard?

On my 68, door and ignition have the same key.
Trunk and glove box use a smaller key.

I miss my car, she is wintering in my sisters 3 car garage.

If it has the stock locks there should be one key for the ignition and one that works on the glovebox, trunk and doors. With the preponderance of cars that have had parts replaced, you could end up with multiple keys like my current project car or my former 80 Spider.

Thanks! In my mind it's a done deal since the $500 deposit isn't refundable. I'm buying it right after the test-drive assuming the engine doesn't fall out of the bay or the transmission doesn't drop and drag behind the car.

Actually, Marcus has done all the sorts of things I would have done if it were already mine: It's a '74, so it has the 1800 engine and intake manifold, to which he bolted on an Empi 32/36 DFEV carb; he installed Mark's distributorless ignition system with the (quoting Croft) "lighting bolt" spark; he installed a short-shifter; he also put on halogen headlights and completed the brown wire fix. I couldn't get under the car so I can't see if it still has a cat conv., but the exhaust note at the pipe sure sounds sweet, and I know the smog air-pump was removed.

It has all the right bits, so I didn't even haggle on price.

From when I saw it running, the engine is definitely leaking oil, but I couldn't tell if it was from the cam cover or elsewhere. I'll clean it when I get it and go from there. First priority is safety belts; then chase down the leak -- expecting to replace seals and timing belt over the summer. Then fix the heater (valve was leaking so the pipe was re-routed). The list already begins...

Hope to meet you there for sure! Actually, I'm deeply conflicted about spring. Yesterday was the best day skiing of the season with my eight and six year old daughters -- we were laughing and singing on the chairlift and having a blast in the sun and soft snow. We need more of those days, for sure, and I really look forward to spring skiing.

It's selfish, but as was the case with my motorcycle, I want snow, snow, snow until the ski season is over, and then the next day I want the snow gone and roads washed of salt. Some years I had my bike on the road by March 16th (day after the Ides of March!), but this year I suspect the driving seasons may not start until a couple of weeks later...

Sooo... I'm getting my fix on these boards and learning as much as I can. A Haynes manual and factory workshop manual are on the way. And I ask questions about keys and such. Sorry for the hijacking of the thread!!
