Re: Cam box interchange
SteveC,
Thanks for your input and information you posted on head flow on the Turbo124 forum...very informative. I always thought these cams were of different manufacture because the look physically different, and I thought if they were both BREDA they would be stamped the same. Since I took those pictures, I sent the cams to a machinist I know that builds Alfa race heads to have them mapped because I need to know what they are. I have adjustable cam gears on the way from Miller's Mule so I need to know what the cams are to set up the timing correctly. The PO had about 5 Fiat race cars and didn't keep highly accurate records of his engine builds. He said they were FAZA and thought 40-80/80-40 grind, but wasn't 100% sure. I know they have a lot more duration and from what I can measure between the base circle and lobe, look like they are 10.5mm lift. They also come on hard at about 3800 RPM.
Maybe I would be best to just buy a new set of cams? I guess I'll just wait and see what these are, then decide.
Jeff

Re: Cam box interchange
Yes, Steve...They don't look like a matched set of cams. Your information on them is interesting, and is the most information I have been able to get in over a year of research. It just confirms the need to get these things measured to see what I have. I'll start another thread after I get the cams mapped.
Thanks again for your and BEEK's time and information here.

Re: Cam box interchange
international autoparts used to sell them, i have bought 10 or more sets from them, but it was well over 10 years ago

Re: Cam box interchange
BEEK,
These cams are at least 15 years old. The car was built in 1999 from another Fiat 124 race car he had. The 1438 was freshened at that time but the cams were the same, so I would imagine they are from the early 90's, if not older.

Jeff,
Your intake cam matches up to my 068 camshaft if I punch in the numbers next to my profile.

Re: Cam box interchange
Very interesting, Ted. What about the exhaust? Recognize it? I have adjustable cam gears coming back from Miller's so I may lean on you for some timing advice. Also punching the 2L to 85mm with 8mm domes. Sounds like it will work well with the cam.

Re: Cam box interchange
Jeff,
With adjustable cam pulleys and those cams, I hope you are planning on cutting the piston valve pockets deeper and measuring the clearances, otherwise you are going to be stuck running 110-115 lobe center. The 068 cam's lift at TDC is big and it likes to be timed between 100-105, at lease in my 1800. I run the Pittatore 87 grind exhaust cam (IAP 42/82) instead of the 068 exhaust cam. This combination gives me a lower torqure curve that works better on the shorter track at Waterfordhills.
I think we talked about pistons before, and you are running the cast 8mm domes from one of the vendors. I ran those also before going to these that i have made up by Ross. (Piston Porn)!!

Re: Cam box interchange
Ted,
I love those pistons, but I am on a little tighter budget, so stuck with the cast pistons. And I learned a hard lesson about checking valve to piston clearance in the 1800 when I had valve/piston contact and broke a valve head off at 6500. Not good. I was running the stock cam pulleys and it pulled through fine on the bench. The vendor also told me I would not have any clearance problems with the 8mm domes. But in their defense, they didn't know, nor did I, what the lift really was on the cam so I can't blame anybody but myself.
