Hello Fiatistas,
My clutch pedal broke, so I had to replace it. While i was in there figure i would go ahead and replace the cable. Its all back together now, and seems to be working fine. I just eyeballed the adjustment ( backed it off too far first, and it wasn't fully disengaging the clutch ). Just wanted to know if there was any definitive way to make sure the adjustment is correct?
Thanks,
Ken

Re: clutch cable adjustment
Needs to have 1" (25mm) free play at the pedal.

Re: clutch cable adjustment
not to argue, because what vandor said is correct. but i adjust the clutch where there is about 1/4" of play, or pull back from the pressure plate. so the throw out bearing is not riding all the time. then hook up the spring underneath. that gives about a inch at the pedal

Re: clutch cable adjustment
been going back and forth on the adjustment - thought i had it but when i started up and tried to shift into reverse the gears were grinding - couldn't get the trans to stop turning. so I tightened the adjustment nut 2 turns, no problem with reverse but then it was taking up "funny" - could tell it was slipping a bit at engagement. so i backed it of 1.5 turns and now reverse is grinding again -when its cold, when its warm its fine. guess i'll tighten it another 1/2 turn.... is the adjustment that precise??
Thanks,
Ken

Re: clutch cable adjustment
has anyone fiddled with the spring? Mine seems very heavy. I thought I had a cable problem until I removed the spring and found the cable works fine but the spring is very stiff. psg

Re: clutch cable adjustment
do you mean at the trans or under the dash? at the trans there should be a spring and a hook attached to the clutch fork. they may have been replaced with non-standard pieces. (actually, my clutch seems heavier since i replaced the pedal...)
thanks,
Ken

Re: clutch cable adjustment
Watch your firewall make sure it is not flexing/cracked.
Did clutch work fine BEFORE all this began??

Re: clutch cable adjustment
My fiat mechanic (sports car authority) was driving the car and recommended a new cable thinking mine was binding. It worked fine just seemed stiff/heavy. The engine is out for a performance tweak so I decided to swap cables. The old cable seems fine and everything else seems fine so the culprit seems to be the heavy spring and I am wondering if others have changed springs and what they may have used from the trans to the fork. psg

Re: clutch cable adjustment
the clutch was fine before the pedal broke - think I got the adjustment worked out - all is good now!
