can't get it into drive

Can get it into reverse and reverses nicely and smoothly, however I can not get it to go into drive, tried low and intermediate gear as well but nothing, only reverse. Any ideas that may not need to work on the transmission before I yank the transmission out?

Yes, it is the original transmission to the 1980.

The automatic is a GM tranny (not sure which one) and any competent shop should be able to source parts and rebuild it.

first step is to make sure the fluid level is correct

That was the first thing I checked, was low so added till it was at the correct level. To my understanding usually reverse is the first thing to go in a transmission which is why I was thinking it might be something else.
