Does it have to be Japanese to induce vomiting? Here is a car that makes the bile rise for me.Why?? It is freakin fast and kicks our butt at the track. It will be the first Fiat to take overall race win in the Lemons/Chumps series.A Fiat Spider with a VW diesel!! All kidding aside ,the car is really well turned out,and they have done an awesome job with it.It doesn't hurt that John Baucom(champion Fiat racer and builder) is involved. When they first brought it out,our 1800 Spider was faster and more reliable. Not now.The car has moved to the top of A class(the fastest) while our dual Weber, ported, polished, high compression car struggles mid pack in C class.I am going to do a story on the diesel for Ricambi magazine
I am of the opinion that whatever someone wants to do to their own Spider,I am good with it.As long as it isn't headed to the scrap heap...go for it.

It is an awesome car.We ran circles around them the first time they brought it out.The car couldn't get out of its own way,and belched black smoke everywhere. That is where it got the nickname''Smokey Unit''.It has been improved to the point where it is considered a favorite to win overall honors. They get great mileage and have a big fuel cell. They run longer than everyone between pit stops.I hang out with them at the track, hoping they think of me when they need another driver! :D

for comparison purposes only  ,our aptly named FART car.An acronym for Fiat Abarth Race Team.A stock suspension, with a 1800 motor. The motor has dual webers,a manifold that has been ported, polished and matched to the head(by BEEK),hi comp pistons, mis matched plug wires,etc....
Image
The car is a blast to drive but isn't very competitive in class. We did pull a 3rd in class a few races back, but we have been hampered by reliability issues. The diesel Fiat has 4 link rear suspension,Willwood calipers, big 15'' tirescoilovers,etc.. A real racer. But hey...we look good! Note the liberal use of olive oil cans :D

Even though you guys arent winning, looks like your having lots of fun. I guess thats what its all about anyways. Wish I could do some of that. Been tossing around the idea of slapping together an auto cross car myself. Have an extra x and a spider 2000 sittin around back.

Auto-x is a lot of fun,but there is nothing more fun than being on track with 50 or 60 other like minded lunatics. The Lemons/Chumps group have made road racing fun and affordable for regular guys to do.The racing is very real, but safety and fun are a big part of the package. The spirit of comraderie is amazing.Any help, tools, food, etc you might need, your opponents will happily supply. You and Mark should get a couple teammates and throw a car together. They have plenty of races near you guys.
