There is a 12mm, horizontal, tapped hole in the left-rear, vertical face of my cylinder head. It is high, adjacent to the cylinder-bolt boss. It appears to be blind, not connecting to any internal passage. I don't remember anything screwed in there when I disassembled the head. What is the purpose of this hole?

The long number cast into the top of the head will give you an idea of where it's from. As Steve said, my first thought was a Lancia.
