I wonder if he replaced the rear end as well. If he didn't, the new owner will have that project to look forward to. If I did an engine swap, i always thought this would be the way to go.

Yes! The engine will scream and diff will too just before it blows up! The standard brakes won't pull you up quick enough so you'll probably hit something at 9000 rpm! An Italian car with a Japanese heart is just not on! If you want that engine just go buy a Honda S2000. It's like going to an Italian restuarant expecting spaghetti and getting a plate of sushi instead! engine swap fantasies abound in the internet age. Seems so simple, take a way more powerful modern engine, and stick it in your classic car.
Like people have posted , the reality is you would need a full re-engineering of these cars to run that kind of power with any sort of reliability. besides the tranny, dif, and brakes, the front ends are also under built on the 124's, and the stress would crack and break things in short order. Abarth chucked the entire 124 front end and came up with a completely redesigned front suspension for the 124 rally cars.
I know there has been some interesting swaps done on X19's, but it ends up being a lot of money and time to get them sorted out, and it is usually irreversible, as cutting of the body is involved in most of them. I drove an early x19 with a built up Fiat 1500 and twin DCNF's--it made well over 100 HP. Don't know why you'd need more power than that engine made in those cars .
My 2000 pound AS series 124 makes about 130HP with the tuned 1800 engine I run in it. Even with this set up, I broke the old dif pretty quickly and was lucky to have a new old stock brand new ring and pinion to rebuild it.

Quick question, when you say you lost the rear out of your with the 130hp out of a 1800 was that while thrashing it or trying to launch it hard? Or was that from just rolling on the throttle and it letting go? Thanks
