 When someone says "Drive it like you stole it!" that mess in the oil pan is what I envision as a result. So... how'd THAT happen?

EXACTLY .... driving like I stole it ... only off road .. loaded with camping gear .. going up a mountain pass/trail/snow.... knew the motor needed some attention... wanted one last trip before I tore into it .... got me less than half a mile from my spot ... hiked in the last bit.... camped for a week .... then let gravity get me back to where the tow truck came and got me .... fun and scary but extremely stupid

Holy Moly! A simple oil change should fix it.

Please tell me someone used the quote, "wull herez yur problum ratcheer" when that was first found.
Sorry for your misfortune, but I couldn't resist that one.
It can only get better from here.
Good Luck.

Maybe it was a divine intervention thing. Did the thought "I don't want to work on my Fiat" cross your mind around the time of your camping camping trip? Last year I thought "I don't want to do exterior work on my house." My wish was granted the very next morning. Walked out to my car to go to the lumber yard. No car... Hmmm, maybe I'm getting an early case of sometimer's disease. Check the garage. No car... Check outside again... Still no car. Kinda took care of the whole home improvement sitch for a while

Anyway, glad you made it back from your trip okay.

Matt,
Is this the motor in your IH Scout?
If so, what size motor?
Only reason I ask is out of morbid curiosity. I used to own a 1946 International K-3 fire truck, so I have a special place in my heart for cornbinders.

yes it is ... knew when it happened something was seriously wrong ... put out my tale of woe on binderplanet (website like this one only for internationals) .. generous member had just bought and engine tranny combo and only wanted the tranny .... gave me the motor.... have been rebuilding it myself for quite some time.... bit by bit .... roommate calls it project glacier ... slow.... finally am at the point of starting to reassemble everything on the motor.... cam and crank went back in today ... rear main seal tomorrow..fresh paint and all new gasket kit... member is hosting a workday at his 4 bay garage in a couple of weeks and will get the oil pump rebuilt then... after that things will go quickly... just need some warm weather to finish body and paint.... shade tree job the whole way.... have been collecting parts going on 2.5 years now.... was sort of a rolling restoration until engine blew up ....... now all the things on the list will be completed together.... 1976 scout II ........ 345 engine (5.7 liter) ... 4 speed manual... lifted.. bigger tires ..33 gallon tank... all rusted metal being replaced with new sheet metal... refurb dash and gauges... new bucket seats... roll bar... blah blah blah ..first timer newb on lots of resto work but having a blast and learning a lot ... should be quite the capable camping rig to go anywhere the fiat can't .... funny both my vehicles are convertables... no air and vent windows .... without radios ....

binders get under your skin just like that fiat has done..... k-3 I bet was fun to own

proud papa pic when I first bought it

That looks like a fun rig.
Ah yes, the ole 345.

Yes, the '46 K-3 was a lot of fun. It had a 214 Green Diamond flathead 6. The tranny was a K-4 4-speed with granny gear, ordered that way from the factory.

I miss the old binder. It brought a lot of smiles to a lot of faces over the years.

when living in grand junction I stopped for breakfast and an old couple came out and saw the scout.... big smile and we traded stories .. I offered up the keys and said take it for a spin... good thing the service was slow.. they were gone for almost an hour .... when they returned got some of the best hugs I have had in a long time ....
