Re: what does the spider engine weigh?
I didn't weigh mine when it was out of the car, but from lifting it I'd say 400 including intake/exhaust and fuel system would be about right. Most of the weight is in the block and exhaust manifold. The head and fuel system is quite lightweight.

Re: what does the spider engine weigh?
I don't know what it weighs, but I'd be surprised if it was 400 lbs. I built a plywood engine transporter:
http://www.fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopic ... 35#p198035
and my 1800 was an straightforward two man lift. A 400 lb engine would imply 200 lbs per person - which I wouldn't have been lifting. Purely guessing I would have said between 100-150 lbs without the flywheel, exhaust, or intake manifolds on it.

Re: what does the spider engine weigh?
John Erskine estimated that the '81 2L with the clutch and flywheel I bought was just under 500 lbs. But I may have misheard or misunderstood him. He probably said, well under.

Re: what does the spider engine weigh?
Couldn't find our engine, but did find an interesting link:
http://fixrambler.com/engineweightchart.txt
According to the table there, the Fiat/Ferrari Dino V6 is 285 lbs and the Alfa 1600 is 261 lbs.
Based on that I'd say my inability to lift a 400 lb engine is confirmed!

Re: what does the spider engine weigh?
I'd say about 280-320
500# one is in ford small block range
No good reason this engine should weigh more than a Ford 2.3 SOHC or Toyota 22R

Re: what does the spider engine weigh?
i will have to weigh the one im building piece by piece and assembled. but no bs, when i was younger working at the fiat salvage yard, i could pick up longblocks, probably less flywheel and place them on a workbench. my back hurts today probably because of that im guessing about 180max or a longblock, no flywheel or manifolds
i just weighed a bare block, no main caps 88.4 for a 2.0 but that is on a digital bathroom scale, so not sure o the accuracy
aj81spider, according to that chart a "fiat twincam from a 128" weighs 272, i have to disagree, but thats just me, his source was a unknown magazine article

Re: what does the spider engine weigh?
my question was because I saw a 3.4 V6 hanging from a scale at 425. Thats 140+hp/200Tq. Looks interesting still. I really like the personality of the 2.0, I just love a strong power to weight ratio.

Re: what does the spider engine weigh?
the mitsubishi 6g72 weighs about 350lbs, it makes 222hp , turbo one weighs 380 makes 320hp. this is the reason i am using it in my scorpion modification

Re: what does the spider engine weigh?
looks like a bit of a difficult fit physically, wide and tall. Good choice weight/power wise.

Re: what does the spider engine weigh?
I race against a Fiat Spider with a transplanted VW turbo diesel! I don't know what it weighs ,but it is fast. They have big fuel cell and can run longer on a tank than anyone out there. The last race, they finished second and missed the overall win by virtue of a bad pit stop.Really cool rig.

Re: what does the spider engine weigh?
I don't know how to post photos - if you can tell me the steps, I'd appreciate it and will post the photos.
A few years ago using a calibrated Dillon dynameter (precision fish scale) 0-1000#, My complete 2L with a 1.8L head, 4 into 2 exhaust manifold, intake manifold, 32/36 carby, distributor with plug and coil wires, flywheel, clutch, pressure plate (pressure plates are heavy), water pump, early style thermostat housing with just one hose connection, upper and lower radiator hoses, and a fan belt, and no rubber engine mounts weighed 336 pounds. Deduct from this weight a lifting strap with two hooks (maybe 2 pounds) and a small clevis (1 more pound). Uncertainties: How much coolant is left in the engine block (most drained out), and did I drain the oil before weighing (I think so.)
The 2L block is about 15mm taller, I believe, than the 1592 / 1756 blocks and one could probably do a reasonable calculation of the block wall thickness x the perimeter + the cylinder perimeters x their thicknesses to get a deduct for shorter blocks. The crankshafts also get heavier with larger strokes, and the flywheels on 1.8/2.0 engines are larger too. Steel is about 0.28 pounds per cubic inch.
