Replacing Transmission

Post by unplugged »

I lost 4th at the beginning of the summer so it is a winter project to replace the transmission with a rebuild.
Besides the transmission itself are there any other parts I will need.
First thing that comes to mind would the driveshaft Flex Joint ? But that is as far as I can visualize the job.
What else ?

Thoughts.

thanks

Depending on the mileage and condition of the parts while you are in there it may be a good time to consider checking the clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing and pilot bearing. And, if there are any leaks at the oil pan or the rear main seal, that would be the time to address those, too. Not all necessarily something your car may need right now, but all worth checking while the transmission is out.

The rubber on the transmission mounts tends to deteriorate (gets soft and gooey). Since the drive shaft will be out, also replace the U-joints.

Good time to check the soundness of the body to bellhousing ground wire.
If it is torn or missing replace the clutch fork boot and the lower shifter boot.

Where can you find transmissions? Can't find a 5 speed anywhere. Will a 4 speed work in it's place in a 1980 124?

Where are you located? In the US we did not get any 4-speeds in Coupes or Spiders. Transmissions are easily available used or rebuilt.

There is a Fiat club in Houston, with members in Austin, San Antonio, etc.
If you email me I can get you in touch. Several members have parts cars and someone may have a good transmission.

You can also have yours rebuilt, but it's a lot more $$.
