Where I live in Ga.,getting a gun is a joke.I bought a Sig Sauer 9mm at a gun show several months ago.The dealer logged in on his phone, did the background check, and I walked out with the gun and a box of ammo 10 minutes later!! To get my concealed wepons permit,I filled out a app,had my picture taken, and was fingerprinted. The licence to carry was in my mailbox in 2 weeks, total cost $70.No safety course or training. It really shouldn't be that easy.
I live in a very rural area, where everybody has rifles in their truck, and a holstered pistol on their side. Its like the Wild West. There is virtually no crime here though.Someone breaking into a car or house,is literally taking their life in their hands!!

That story about the child shot is a terrible tragedy, and all of these awful cases should be reported front and center, as they are, by the media. It keeps the inherent danger and responsibility associated with personal defense in front of us, as it should be. But the media are not so quick to report the 30,000-2,000,000 DGU (defensive gun uses) that take place in the US each year. The estimates vary greatly, but even at the low end, I choose to defend myself and my family. As I wrote here about a year ago, my own life has been under threat, twice, and the threat was averted by the possibility of my being armed. Having this happen to you has a funny way of changing your attitude towards the inherent right of self defense that all living creatures have. Rights not given by any government, but given by God as a condition of our natural state. There are regular DGU examples published here, as those forum members who are also NRA members are likely aware.

http://www.nrapublications.org/index.php/armed-citizen/.

The crime statistics point to home invasion and car jacking as common threads. But what does not seem to get enough discussion is the generally acknowledged fact that about 90% of all street crime is perped by people on, and addicted, to drugs, perped in order to gain money for more drugs. They go to court and immediately are put back on the street! It is a national disgrace. As stated earlier here, CA is in the process of letting tens of thousands of perps back out on the street. Disgraceful.

I am not happy that we live in a violent society. This is so wrong on so many levels. I too would gladly pay more taxes (and I live in MA! ) if they were to be used for the construction and staffing of drug treatment centers, and also for the construction and staffing of prisons for those whose behavior cannot otherwise be controlled.

For anyone who has an interest in our US Constitution and Declaration of Independence, I strongly suggest that you check out the free college level lectures and courses offered at http://www.hillsdale.edu They have a fantastic free lecture series and publish the monthly periodical Imprimis, which reaches 2,700,000 people each month. They are doing great work in teaching and preserving the unique liberties (and commensurate responsibilities) that we Americans have.

Lastly, I agree with all of you that we need to stop being the world's policeman. The present global withdrawal that is being so poorly orchestrated by POTUS is not the best way to do it, but if the result is that the rest of the world picks up their portion of the huge tab for all this defense, all for the better.

Anytime the subject of guns come up, as in this thread, it follows a very predictable path. Thanks for keeping this one civil. that is rare. I am not a gun owner. I feel fortunate that I've never felt the need to own one and i hope i finish out my life feeling the same way. I am not a religious guy, although i do consider myself spiritual. Here is my take on this whole affair.
When I was a kid, no one locked their houses or cars. The milkman brought his wares and actually came in the unlocked back door and put stuff in the fridge. With a couple of exceptions, no one stole stuff. You were raised with morals. If it didnt belong to you, then it wasnt yours to take. If you did take something, and your parents found out, you were severely reprimanded and required to return the item to its rightful owner, apologize to their face, and ask what you can do to make up for their inconvenience.
If you got in trouble at school, your parents did not come to your rescue, you were in more trouble yet. You were taught to take responsibility for your actions.
Someplace along this path, we have lost our direction. We have changed into a world where we've all become victims. If we don't get what we want then we feel we have been wronged. If we see someone more fortunate than us, then they are just rich a-holes taking advantage of us poor souls (ie victim). We also look at those less fortunate and see them as a bunch of lazy, good-for-nothings, living off the system on our dime. I doesnt make any difference where you are in this pecking order, the mindset seems to be the same.
along with the victim mindset, we look for any excuse to blame our problems on someone or something else. The latest craze is some acronym defining some disorder so we can all shed responsibility for our own actions. We say to ourselves, "its not my fault, I have XYZ syndrome". If you want to look at the root of school shootings and overall gun violence, look to this issue, not gun ownership. Debating gun ownership, just takes you eye off the ball and it will never solve this issue.
One of the beauty of these Fiat forums is it takes us back to the true path where honesty and helpfulness is the standard commodity without any selfish endgame in mind. For this I applaud you all and wish you all a very merry Christmas and a fruitful new year. Peace, Bros!

here In Colorado you need a permit to "hide" (conceal) your gun .. you are welcome to strap one on your side .. (open carry) .... some of the smaller towns at 16 with a minimum of 100 bucks for a new savings account you get a 22 rifle .. as a child on the farm the rifles hung by the back door and couple of pistols in the drawer.... they were never for defense as far as I knew and the guns that I own also do not have that designation ... it's lots of fun to go to the range and pop tin cans... the meat in the freezer is needed and welcome every year .... agree with azruss about times past and taking responsibility .... also glad to see civil remarks as threads like these get out of hand quickly .... oh and on tues and fri we leave the front door unlocked... our milkman is nice enough to put the milk inside for us....

You started this thread here! I would not dream about starting something on the forum that does not belong here and believe me, I am very opinionated about things, things people would not want to discuss here.

I saw a movie once where only the cops and military had guns. I think it was called schindlers list.

Rather extreme and in poor taste don't you think.
Perhaps this is a good time to put an end this thread.
