My favorite rifle of all time is my 1947 Schmidt-Rubin K31 Swiss, straight pull. 7.5X55 Swiss. It is absolutely amazing how accurate this thing is. When we were sighting it in at about 75 feet, I thought something was wrong until we realized we were putting successive rounds through the same hole in the paper. I have been selling off my collection to finance my just beginning engine build, but this one will stay. It does the 200 and 300 yard ranges with ease.

It is pretty cool. It was common convention back then for the original Swiss soldier to whom it was issued to put a small piece of waxed paper with his name, address, rank and unit, etc. under the butt stock, and this rifle still has that original document with it. The fellow, if still alive, would be well into his 80's by now. I have occasionally given some thought as to contacting him to see if he is still around.

Sorry to hear that, but it not the guns fault
you do agree with me that id would be nice to keep guns out of hands of idiots?

by the way, i have been in the army and used on daily basis ak47, dragunov and black arrow (50cal sniper). and when i say used, i do mean it, take a look at my location, so i dare say that i'm qualified on this subject

Yes, the common denominator in all of these tragedies is the mental health factor. It is a difficult issue to grapple with, balancing the privacy rights and the B.O.R. of the U.S. citizen against the obvious need for public safety. There hasn't yet been proposed a good solution for getting the state mental health databases into the NICBCS.

in my part of the world, and by this i mean 90% of europe, be it ex east block countries or western ones, it takes a lot of paperwork to get a permit for any kind of gun. waiting period is measured in months, and if one has any history of mental illness or a criminal record of any kind, permit is simply denied. if you don't have a history of mentall illness or criminal record, you need to take a month long firearms safety training at local police station. meanwhile, policemen will interview your neibghours, coleagues at workplace, wife, parents, in order to get a profile of you.
even when a permit is given, you'd only get a permit for a specific weapon with a serial number in it, so if you want another one, you need to get another permit.
in balkan contries, you can't get a permit to carry weapon. you can only keep it at your home or a workplace. it's strictly forbidden and caries a jail penalty to carry a weapon if it's not disassembled, meaning that firing mechanism is detached from a barrel and ammo is in a separate container. as far as i know, simmilar laws are in place in all of europe.

allowed types of weapons for citizens are
bolt action hunting rifles up to 7.9mm
shotguns
pistols and revolvers

semy automatic weapons are forbidden, except pistols.
automatic weapons of any kind are forbidden
automatic weapons with auto mode disabled are forbidden.

ammo is sold only at specialized shops to people with permit.

anything resembling a military weapon, be it ar15, uzi, hekler, ak47, dragunov sniper or .50cal bolt action rifle would land you in jail for minimum of 3 years. same goes for unlicenced weapons of allowed types.

result?
maybe one in 50 people i know owns a gun, and 70% of them are ex police or military personel. others are hunters.
in a country of aprox 8 million people, there are no more than 15-20 gun murders anually. out of those, at least half are known criminals, drug dealers mostly.
we had no mass shootings of any kind ever.

to me, guns are interesting from a technical point of view, but so is a 150yr old sewing machine.

So the "Off Topic & Social" header didn't key you into the fact that the topics on here just might not be Fiat related?

Now fella's. Let's not get into a tizzy about this.

I would weigh in with a history about firearms and their use overseas and here but my guess is it would not change any opinions. I have some very good arguments and facts but they would fall on deaf ears.

Speaking of history. when the Soviet Union fell and many of their documents became public. They found papers written by Nikita Khrushchev stating that he felt an invasion of the United States would be unsuccessful because so many of the citizens owned guns.
This same guy also stated that the United States would become communist without a single bullet being fired. I'll leave my personal opinion out of this one.

and why do you think that discussion about firearms in hands of citizens has anything to do with politics? it has to do with common sense on the one side, and with people making A LOTS OF MONEY on the other side. what's a couple dozen dead kids every couple years compared to a nice fat bonus every christmas season?

so back on topic, why would you want to have .45acp? it's, as someone stated, bullet hose. completely useless apart for drive-by shooting or a random spraying at your local school? i've fired http://gunwikia.wikispaces.com/%C5%A0korpion+vz.+61 back when i was in the army, and it's next to uselless. we called it keep your head down gun. ACP is the same kind of weapon
