Starves on left hand turns. Ideas?
Starves on left hand turns. Ideas?
Just got an 81 2000FI that had been sitting for 8 years for $800. New tires, battery, spent 14hrs in the shop and now I'm driving it everyday. I have an issue though. When I make a hard Left hand turn it stalls out starving for fuel. I can't isolate the issue and at this point I think it has to be crap at the bottom of the tank. Any other glitches that might cause this? It is intermittent and only occurs during left turns. It seems to have good flow returning from the rail.

what level was the tack at when this happened, there are known for it when tank is low (I can get it on 1/4 of a tank) on fuel, if it was a full tank then you have another issue?paintdudeluke wrote:Just got an 81 2000FI that had been sitting for 8 years for $800. I inspected the inside of the tank today and checked fuel pump flow. Tank is spotless and flow is great.
I'm thinking that maybe I'm losing spark because of a shorting of the wires inside the distr'. They look like they've been rubbing on the advance counterweights a little. One of the cap contacts is a bit grooved too..and the distr' was loose. I torched a wrench and made a tool to tighten it up. I'm gonna try a new distr' module/cap/rotor and see if its a crappy wire flopping around inside the cap. I'm running out of ideas, have to be getting close.

If the engine mounts are sagging then the torque of the engine turning will really move that motor around. If the coil wire is a bit short it will briefly disengage. It very well could be the coil wire pulling the cap; so at the very least make sure it has good slack and the electronic module does as well.
In any case no distributor should be loose, ever, and FIAT caps screw down in the later years so there should be no slop anywhere. If the inside is full of carbonized crap and you're seeing gouges, take out the wallet and replace that stuff first.
Seriously doubt it is fuel unless you're on a track curve for a long duration.

Check the fuel tank vent lines connections. Sometimes it's too hard to put the lines through their proper guides and people just directly connects them to the tank. Then they just lay the woodlike trunk panels on top. If you have lots of items in the trunk and turn left, the vent and fuel lines get squeezed. Happen to me once, had to re-do all the vent connections to the tank.
All I need in life is something to eat, something to do and something to love.

status update:
Spotless tank, new filter, new coil, new module,
Starts great. Idles nice. Runs awesome for 5 minutes, then starts acting like it has a real weak spark or is starving with heavy throttle or especially on a left turn. If I park it for 10 minutes, runs great again for a couple minutes, then crappy. That's the part that has has me stumped. It runs great until warmed up then in one moment it starts crapping out, but it almost dies in a LHturn. Makes no sense.
What are the symptoms of a weak pickup coil?

Sounds like either fuel starvation (it runs fine when cold because the car fires an extra injector and has all four injectors on full) or an air leak that, when you turn, opens up.
