painting tubular bumpers

Post by fredguaz »

Has anybody done this? My front and rear bumper chrome is very rusted but all the rubber/plastic/lights are in good shape. Has anybody considered painting over their chrome to create an all black bumper? Photos? I don't want to go through the expense of a re chrome.

Might look like a truck bumper when you are done.

Here you go.

This beauty is on Craigslist and Ebay right now. The seller claims it is a 69 Spider. LOL.

I guarentee the one bid is his too.

Anyway here are some black painted bumpers. To each his own but not the way I'd go. I've seen some painted silver or "chrome" and they look much better. Don't know where you are from but since so many guys remove these bumpers and go naked, like the one at the top of the forum page, these turn up used all the time. Weights too much to ship but if you can find some locally they shouldn't cost much.

I'd paint them silver in the meantime, unless you like the no bumper look which also lightens up the car considerably.

Good luck, post some pics.

Oh, I see you are in Lake Norman. My son's in Charlotte.

Bunch of Spider guys in the Charlotte area and Denise in Walkerville is a Spider expert. Check out her beautiful 72. She might have some bumpers around.

I would have them powder coated rather then painted. Price wise you're about the same maybe a little more but durability is ten times that of regular automotive paint... Just my .02

There should be a few sets of good bumpers available with the members here, half of them seem to think the car looks good without them (see picture of red pininfarina Spider to your upper right). In a few years they'll want them back, when the boat taillamps and glued-in yugo blinkers start to grow old. :-)

I have seen a spider where the bumpers were black...but... so was every other chromed piece on the car... trim.. marker light surrounds .... headlight rings and plate lights ... he did it because all of his chrome pieces were quite bad and it was a cheap way to fix it .... I thought it looked quite good actually .... but just doing the bumpers would look (to me) a little off..... but I am also cheap and would get use to it quick.... also I will throw in my vote for just removing them
