In California, you must do a "motor swap" per Cal EPA. You can't legally just convert to EFI when I spoke with them. That being said, the 79 head has an extra port on the exhaust manifold side of the head which would have to be plugged. You could easily swap an EFI head and EFI system and nobody would be the wiser.
The automatic works fine on the 79. It is not a high performance machine but has sufficient power to be a solid driver. The EFI would improve performance significantly.
