Empi 32/36 Jets

Post by mpollock »

I have a new EMPI 32/36 DFEV carb from Mark on my 2L Engine. I replaced the original 28/32 instead of rebuilding when it crapped out. I still have the dual-plane intake for now. Is anyone running this carb on a 2L motor? I can't idle below 2K RPM until it gets warmed up, and it runs a bit rough even after warming up. I know the mechanical fuel pump is a bit flaky and I have a new electric to replace it with. I haven't done any other troubleshooting yet, and I suspect the vacuum advance on the distributer might be screwy also. The real question though, is what the recommended jetting for this carb is for a 2L, and if jets from the factory are appropriate. Is anyone out there running this setup?

I also bought one of those carbs and had some idle issues initially. When I really started looking at it the screws holding the electric choke on weren't tight allowing it to slide away from the carb body. After snapping a screw off trying to get it tight I finally retapped all the holes, bought grade 8 hex head bolts and loctited the bolts when i put it back together. The bolts went in much easier and I haven't had any problems since.

After her winter nap she will have a single-plane manifold on her. My short term goal is to reclaim her space in the garage. I think this is the first time in her life that she's seen snow.

on some 2L motors we've had to go up one or two sizes on the low speed jet. Have you tried to adjust the mixture? Even if the low speed jet is a size too small, you should be able to enrichen the jdle mixture with the adjusting screw

I have adjusted the mixture and that did help. I should get the new fuel pump installed in the next week or so, and check the distributor advance to make sure it's working right before I mess any more with the jetting. I replaced the carb without doing much research as the original had deteriorated to where the car would barely run. Looks like I probably also need to replace the intake manifold with one from an 1800 to take advantage of the bigger secondary.
