Next on my list is to replace the carb. I ran into a great article on this forum about the different types and am thinking a 34ADF might be good to go to.
Would love to hear from anyone who has swapped to a new carb on your experience and what you like and don't like.
My current original stock carb on my 78 with 90,000 miles is tired and I'm definately going to replace it.
I just upgraded to a salvaged 4-2-1 exhaust manifold and downpipe followed by a new resonator and muffler with 2 inch pipes, in case that plays in to your carb recommendation.
Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!

Another option to consider would be a Weber 32/36 DFEV. Smaller primary but bigger secondary than the 34/34 AFD. Easier to find and less money too. I run one on my 2L and it works great with a single plane intake and 4-2-1 exhaust.
Weber Direct sells the DFEV for $199.
The best part is when the secondary kicks in.

I put a 34ADF on my 76 and there was a noticeable seat of the pants improvement over the 32ADFA.
Only problem I had was that I had to take the main throttle shaft out of the 32 and put it in the 34 to get the linkage to work. Not sure if a 78 has the same set up.

couple questions for wyspider:
will I need an adapter plate?
multiple gaskets?
was the throttle pull tricky to set up? you have the cam box mounted throttle control, correct? works without fabrication?
anything special I need to do with the egr?
Is the electrical choke connection straight forward or do I need to modify anything?
anything else I should have asked?
thanks a ton

Re: Opinions, experience with best carb for a 78
I had a mechanic install the DFEV on my car but here are some details.
Adapter Plate:
Mine was installed on a stock dual plane manifold w/o an adapter. He did used a couple small spacers, but no adapter was necessary.
When I switched to a single plane manifold - I installed this myself - I added a 1" spacer from Miller's Mule. This moves the carb away from the manifold to minimize fuel boil in the carb .
Pretty sure Allison's Automotive sells plastic spacers if you don't want metal.
Multiple Gaskets:
On my setup with the Miller's Mule spacer I have one gasket between the manifold and the 1" spacer and a second one between the 1" spacer and the carb. I made these using gasket material, Advanced Auto sells it, a modeler's knife, and hole punch.
You have the cam box mounted throttle control, correct? works without fabrication?
Yes, cam box throttle control. My mechanic fabricated something for the linkage. Pretty sure this step is covered on the forum.
Allison's Automotive sells something for setting up the linkage. Search for "Carburetor Linkage Adapter for Weber or EMPI 32/36 Carb" on his site.
Anything special I need to do with the egr?
With my single plane manifold the EGR has been removed. No emissions testing in Wyoming.
Is the electrical choke connection straight forward or do I need to modify anything?
You need a power source for this. Not sure what my mechanic used but it is supposedly straight forward.
Here's what the end product looks like installed on a single plane manifold.
I would recommend searching this forum for DFEV and reading all the ins and outs of installing the carb and things to consider if you live in an area that has emissions testing.

nothing to see here... move along.
Re: Opinions, experience with best carb for a 78
update: ordered a weber which was shipped yesterday as well as the gaskets, spacers and adapter needed from Mark. Thank you Mark for your help as I work through this thing. Which brings me to what I hope is my last question.
Is there anything on my manifold that you see that should be blocked off differently/better? There's the bulbous thing on the left and then the little vacuum sealer on the right- wondering if both those openings should be bolted off or filled with some kind of specially designed plug?
Good to go as is?
thank you!

Plug the fitting on the left, the one on the right should be for the brake booster.
