I am working on the rear bumper os my 72 Fiat Spider. The bumper was off the car when I bought it. It seems in fair condition and I had a 7" section of stainless steel tubing welded on one end that holds the end rubber.
It appears the bumper was removed by someone in a hurry as the end rubbers have the metal connceting brakets damaged. On one the bolt was broken and on the other the bolt head was rounded and pulled through the bumper.
I don't want to rechrome at this time due to budget constraints and am not sure if this is worth it or purchase a rear bumper in better condition. I wonder what the best way to attach the end rumbers would be. Do I try to replace the metal connecting plate and fiberglass it in? Do I just run a bolt right through it which would look bad but be funtional? Do I just sandblast them and paint them? Do I try to fabricate the bupper out of stainless steel tubing? Or just leave them off as I see other Spder owners do?
Thanks for your responses.

Re: Rear Bumper Questions
I think those are the wrong bumpers for a 72. You should have the early style close fit. You have the 5 mph bumpers. Dont think those came in to production until maybe 74 or 75

Re: Rear Bumper Questions
It may be possible I have the wrong bumpers as they were not on the car when I bought it. However the previous owner of 20 years told me they were the ones on it before it was sent to be painted. Can you tell me if they could be interchangeable. Here are pictures of the car without the bumpers.

Re: Rear Bumper Questions
Usually people are going the other way, taking off the big double tube bumpers and putting on the smaller earlier style. The later style are mounted on two tubes that extend through holes in the body which I'm not sure the 72 would have. It's possible the previous owner modified your car so the later bumpers could be used.
