The unused barbs connected to each other, cap them off now, don't leave them connected to each other. It might not make a difference in how it runs or works, but you're likely creating a pressure drop in one area that isn't supposed to have a pressure drop, then as you accelerate, creating the opposite.
How these things work depend on their position in the carb body. They may or not may be drawing in air depending on the position of the throttle. But they all draw air IN, not out, and some have little diaphragms and stuff. You're forcing one of them to draw air in from another one that is trying to draw air out, and maybe not at the same time.
Like I said, might not make a difference, but worth $1.00 in caps from pep boys.

brad - thanks. got the caps and installed them yesterday. no perforomance difference but i noticed a positive difference in sound coming from the engine compartment. there was a kind of air sucking sound which is now gone. thanks.
