Manifold Heat Shield?
What should I do to restore the manifold heat shield on my '79 Spider? It's rusty but solid. Paint? Powdercoat? What color? Thanks!

Re: Manifold Heat Shield?
I have had really good luck with powder coating. At the time, colors were limited to black, silver, and red so I went with the silver color to mimic the original metal color it would have had when new. If you do go the powder coat route make sure you request heat-resistant material as "regular" powder coating will get destroyed on a heat shield. Also, be prepared for some funky odor for the first few drives - it will go away after a while. After a 1500 miles it looks like the day it was installed. If I recall correctly, it was about $70 US to get it done. That included media blasting and any other prep, materials, and finishing. All I had to do was the removal and installation.
You could also rattle-can it every year or so. There are some pretty good paints on the market for just such a thing as a heat shield. It would be somewhat less expensive than powder coating but you will have to deal with removal and installation each time unless you just paint-in-place. I've seen a few where the owner used brush-on paint - it's painted but looks like farm equipment when done that way.
