Little crank breather elbow

Post by burlybryan »

The one under the intake, above the alt. If anyone feels compelled to replace this little monster, just walk over to a kitchen drawer, open it, put your hand in and slam it shut. The struggle to #1 remove the dried out one (in a dozen bits) and #2 somehow fit both ends on where there is no room for maneuverability left lots of blood on the bottom of the intake. Evil hose.

It sure sounds painful. The only problem I've had was finding the right one that fits.

If not done with self muitilation. Try soaking the hose in hot water for a while and apply a liitle lube to the tube to get it on. Just did one of these a few weeks ago and it was a pain.

Remove or at least loosen the oil vapor separator first and it will be much easier.

This little evil elbow is also on my "to do" list. It looks like it might be easier to remove the oil vapour separator, then attach the new elbow to it, then put the the OV separator and elbow back on the engine as an assembly. What else would be involved with this procedure? I assume there may be a gasket involved between the the OV separator and the engine. Is there anything else that is attached by the OV separator bolt that might move and be a pain to put back together?

Yep, removing the vapor separator would be the smart and simple solution. By the time I started considering this, I had the new hose pretty flexible and was able to walk it on.

Arghhh!!#%@&%#!!

I tried replacing this elbow this morning and have been successful in tearing one end of the new rubber elbow. I should have ordered two!
I tried removing the oil vapor separator first, but I didn't go much further down this path as the bolt hits the intake manifold before coming all the way out. The OV separator also didn't move with the bolt loose. I didn't want to force the OV separator so I just tried man-handling the new elbow into position. I worked the elbow so it was fairly flexible and lubed the inside, but I still ended up tearing it as I was using a flat blade screw driver to help get the elbow on.

I can't find a lot of detail regarding the OV separator.
1) With the bolt loose, should I give the separator a little "whack" to loosen it?
2) Can the separator be removed without hitting the intake manifold?
3) Is there be a gasket that will need to be replaced? (between the separator and the engine block)?

Does anyone have any experience with loosening and removing the OV separator they can share?
It would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sometimes I am a little to apprehensive for my own good.
I went back out to the car and gave the OV separator a little tap and it came off with ease. I wish I would have done this to start with as this method should be a lot easier when it comes to replacing the "evil" little elbow. Once I get a new elbow I am going to attach it to the OV separator first, then put this assembly back on the engine.

Picture 3) A shot inside the separator mounting location. Note the threaded hole in the engine for the separator bolt.

My gasket knowledge is not very large. Does anyone know what material the gasket is made from?

Good work Wheel. Nice pics. I have a kit of gasket material from Napa that comes with an 1/8" thick sheet of cork, a 1/16" thick sheet of paper material and a 1/32" sheet of paper material. For these odd gaskets, you can trace and cut out your own with an exacto blade.

Thanks.
My father-in-law was telling me he used to used old "Corn Flakes" cereal boxes for gaskets. I think I will follow your advice and check out what Napa stocks.

Corn flakes!!! I thought everyone used Wheaties boxes  I've used an odd shoe box or cereal box in the past. They seemed to work OK at the time, especially since I was a poor college kid with zero extra bucks laying around for car repairs

I bought a sheet of gasket material from NAPA. It was pretty easy to make.
You can purchase the gasket at the following link:

Or I guess Wheaties will work too!
