Folks, I have an 82' with the drivers side alternator bracket mounted on the engine block via a stud. I noticed a very little bit of play in the alternator bracket caused by what I think is a slight stripping of the stud in the block. Can someone confirm for me that the stud this bracket attaches to is like so many other studs in the block and that i can take it out and replace with a new stud to re-tighten up the bracket. Also, if it is a stud, will oil or water pour out of the opening in the block when I take the stud out?
Thanks for you insight into what i hope will be a quick fix.

Re: alternator bracket stud
the stud does not go into any jackets, but the alternator bracket is pushing against the block, and should not put any stress on the stud, that stud is only under tightening load. i have never seen one stripped out, the bracket would oblong or break first. but then again, you may have a first.

Re: alternator bracket stud
Beek, I think I overtightened the nut on the stud when replacing the alternator about two years ago. I had a faulty torque wrench at the time and think i actually stript the stud a little myself. I used a washer against the block to gain thread space for the braket and i think the braket will occasionally move just a little. it is not a big deal but i know it is there. Recently the V belt would sqeel on a cold start up (never after car was already warm or run that day) and I thought i would re-tighten the belt as well as check the alignment of the belt. Since I'm going to be in there it is as good a time as any to replace that stud.
