79 Spider 2000 won't idle

Post by barnesjtsl »

The dreaded 28/32 adha.

A few days ago my Spider quit idleing. It goes to idle, starts to idle very roughly at around 1100 rpm then dies.

I just took the air cleaner off and looked inside. When it is cold and the choke is on it idles fast like normal. I opened the choke and looked inside.

Pardon my ignorance, I am not a carburetor man. What I saw was gas sporadically spilling down the carburetor from (these part names are form an exploded view of the carb) the "Auxiliary Venturi" and the "Pump Jet"? Below is a link to the exploded view.

My fuel pump is a 6 psi electric in the trunk. A filter before the pump and a filter at the carburetor. I have been running this setup for about 30,000 and everything has always worked very well.

I'm thinking a stuck float, or maybe gunk in the float bowl? My filters were very dirty before I changed them after this problem started.

Is it tough to get to the float without taking off the carb?

Any thoughts?

You can clean the carb without rebuilding it. Don't remove the carburetor from the intake manifold and just unscrew/remove the air cleaner. After that removed the top screws, should be five of the same screws. Then carefully remove the top part of the carb. You will see the floats and all the jets. Be careful, the floats will be attached to the top of the carb.Carb cleaner w the straw on the jets inside bottom portion of the carb that is still attached to the intake manifold. Most likely you have a float issue. Take a look at the float and carb cleaner it especially the float tube. Make sure the float moves up and down and the float tab is About 3/16 from the float tube. Check to see if the top gasket is not broken. It's literally paper thin, so need to replace if it's broken. After putting the float back together, change fuel filter and your good to go.

If that doesn't work, check the fuel pump. You may send 6psi from the tank, but the carb only needs 3 to 4psi.
You can replace it with a napa or autozone unversal pump for four cyclinder if it is bad. If you have a fuel pressure gauge, a way to tell a bad fuel pump is that the gauge needles move up and down. It should stay on one reading. Mine stays at 3.125 psi.

My 79 did the same thing. It was the idle solenoid on the carburetor. Pull the wire off the solenoid and see if you hear a click, with the key on it has 12v going to it.

It is amazing what a little compressed air will do.

I took the top plate off, cleaned out the bowl. Blew everything out with my air compressor, put it back together and it is running like new.

Unfortunately, with the original carb, it isn't that great. I replaced my carb about 18 years ago, and it was the best money I ever spent.
