Used Trans is Garbage

Post by 80124FI »

I bought a used trans that was allegedly pulled from a working vehicle ... it looked good inside (as far as I could tell knowing very little about the transmission) but the input shaft had play. I put it into each gear and turned the input shaft and the output turned smoothly and it seemed to be good so I installed it ... 1st 3rd and 5th work but grind while turning and 2nd and 4th wont go in ... they don't go in and pop back out under load, they just wont go in at all and grind horribly while trying ... is there a common issue with this? is there an adjustment that could be made or am I going to be putting my old one with no 1st back in? could the parts be easily swapped from the one that has first into the one that doesn't?

The one that has no first seems to be good in all other gears but it moans while driving ... are there bearing that I could change that will stop this or anywhere I could find an in depth rebuild guide?

you need to find someone who knows his way around manual gearboxes. with those two gearboxes, new front bearing and a seal kit, it's very likely that one good gearbox can be assembled.
parts are available and inexpensive

Start with new forks, synchro springs and rings and go from there. Roller bearings are hard to inspect, so tough call on those. It's interesting that fourth and second cause problems on the one. Both of these gears are engaged by pushing down on the lever, which pushes the sleeves towards the engine. I'm surely wrong, but maybe something's wrong with the thrust washer keeping the input shaft steady between the bell housing and trans case.

Are you sure the clutch is disengaging all the way? That may be why it's not going into gear.
However, used gearboxes are always a gamble.

The better of the 2 moans in every gear while under load ... I do have new seals because the output shaft was leaking quite horribly so I decided to buy them ... I cant find a place that sells parts reasonably ... the clutch is disengaging fully and the linkage moves smoothly and crisply clicks into each position but 2 and 4 just barely make contact

I think I am going to try taking the 1st gear assembly out of the garbage one and put it into the one missing 1st

What is it that causes a pop out under load but no pop out under heavy deceleration? I could put it into 1st and let off the clutch and it'll move but if I try to accelerate at all it pops quite a bit ... not a quick pop out of position but many popping jerks ... and if I hold the shifter in place it handles a little more load but not much ... is this bent fork? ground down gears or teeth? I think if I understood what was happening then id have a better understanding of what i'm about to try to solve

So, I believe I found the issue with transmission #1 ... There is way more slop and play in the slider in the first gear position than in any other positions ... With the output shaft locked and a clutch on the input shaft for use as a handle,I applied force in both directions ... Turning one direction the slider leans outward and falls off the 1st gear . I'm guessing worn slider, hub or fork or a bit of all 3

So the plan of the day is to take transmission #2 back out of the car and disassemble it to use it's bits and pieces in hopes of making 1 working transmission ... Then rebuilding #2 in the future with all new components
