I moved this post from restorations to engine and tuning. Maybe now I'll get some response. Sorry, I'm still new to the forum.
I'm cleaning up the engine bay and getting rid of all the smog stuff and now I'm kinda stuck. The charcoal canister had two fuel vapor lines going to it. I removed the 1/4" rubber line, steel line running through the cabin under the carpet all the way to the rubber line going into the gas tank. It's just hanging loose under the car in front of the rear tire. The other return line is still hanging out where I unplugged it under the charcoal canister. It changes into a metal line and runs through the "tunnel" and changes to rubber before it passes through the trunk area and connects to the top of the connector that has 3 hoses going into the top of the gas tank.
Questions;
1. What can I do with these 2 lines to get rid of them and avoid "vapor lock" Can I just plug the 1/4" line on the top of the fuel tank? Can the rubber hose from the 3 way connector just hang out under the car where it comes through the trunk?
2. Why are there 3 hoses in the top of the tank going to the one connector? Is the tank sectioned off in 3 places? That's my guess.

Re: Removing smog stuff
the 3 lines comming from the top of the tank are the vapor lines, these must remain open somewhere so air can be drawn into the gas tank as the fuel leaves. if you do not want to run a charcoal canister then those lines should be run up front thru the metal line and you can attach them to the carb at the float bowl vent. there should not be a large enough suction to cause any issues there. if so you can vent them under the hood. but i recommend using the charcoal canister, it doesnt hurt performance and it will help keep any gas smell from coming back into the cabin

Re: Removing smog stuff
Thanks 4uall, but I've already read both of those threads and they don't really answer my questions.
Beek, Take a look at these and let me know if you see the float bowl vent. I don't know if my carb has one.
It's a 32 36 DFA most of the emissions stuff was already removed by the PO. The only hose from the charcoal canister was the bottom one going back to the 3 way connector. Could I move the Charcoal canister to the back of the car? Somewhere in/under the trunk maybe? and just reroute the hoses there? doesn't make sense that they're in the engine bay to vent the gas tank. I've also read somewhere on here about drilling a small hole in the gas cap or top of the overflow pipe next to the gas cap. thoughts?

Re: Removing smog stuff
i dont see any pictures, but all stock carbs have the vent line, it is on the front side of the cover, not where the fuel lines hook up, but the lone one. yes you can plug off the vent and put a hole in the gas cap, that will work too. for what its worth , i wouldnt relocate the canister, if you want it gone from under the hood then just eliminate it and drill a hole in the gas cap.about a 1/8" hole is all it should take

Re: Removing smog stuff
ok saw the pictures, not a stock carb, so no vent line hook up

Re: Removing smog stuff
When you get time remove that 79 intake manifold and get a 1800 intake manifold. Your new carb will perform much better with the older manifolds.
Re: Removing smog stuff
Thanks Beek, I understand the benefits of leaving it in but just want to get everything out of the engine bay and make it as clean as possible. Wondering now if I can just get rid of the three lines out of the tank and plug them if I drill the 1/8" hole in the gas cap?
Lanciaha, Don't have a spare sitting around I could get do ya? would love to change it over. Also need to find a plug/cover for the EGR valve I want to remove.
Thanks so much for the help you guys are giving me. Love this forum and wouldn't be able to do half the stuff I'm fixing without ya'll.
Gonna replace those ugly grounds on the engine bay soon with nice clean grounding bars. Think I'll put headlight relays in the spot where the charcoal canister came out. I'll post pictures when I'm done.
