Re: Acceleration issues.
Majicwrench, Thanks a lot for sticking to your guns about testing which is very logical & a well taken truth but I put in a brand new Bosch fuel pump about 250 miles ago and when it was recently tested it had tonnes of pressure. Since then, I've had a fuel filter that has no more than 150 miles on it that was full of dirty, mirky fuel and a fuel tank with more dirt, grit and debris in it than I would suspect any fuel tank should ever reasonably have so there seems to be a really strong argument for a restriction in the fuel supply system caused by dirt. If in the end it's not the dirt, I'm still not comfortable leaving that amount of dirt and crud in the fuel system so I still think a good fuel system flush is in order no matter what as it can only be a good thing but your point is well taken and always a solid practise in the world of repairs. Thanks a bunch for your input...I really do appreciate it.

You can check volume pretty easily. Pull the coil wire. Remove the fuel line at the cold start valve. Have a helper direct the flow into a quart jar while you crank the engine.
I couldn't find a spec. When I did this, I got about a pint in 5-8 seconds. You'll know if you have a blockage if it is only a trickle.

All that tells you is yes, pump is pumping fuel, or no it's not. How much is enough?? Esp if you don't have spec.
To know what is going on, you HAVE to do it on the car, running, when the problem is occuring. Any dropping when car is running is supply problem. If pressure stays up while problem occurs, you have an issue with delivery. Anything else is guessing.

Re: Acceleration issues.
Hi Keith,
Today will be the moment of truth.....test drive day! I just finished buttoning everything up last night after having to wait for spare parts to arrive etc. In the end, I removed all the lines and flushed them thoroughly (an incredibly tedious job), replaced whatever flexible rubber hoses could be replaced, replaced the fuel tank & filter and had the Fuel injectors and the entire f.rail professionally flushed and cleaned. I also ran the F.pump on the bench to flush it out and it was pumping really strong;that being said, everything that I did flush including the pump etc did show evidence of that red/rust colour sediment that I mentioned before so assuming that I did get it all out, I'm optimistic. I fired her up last night and she sounded great but I won't know until I put it on the road and under some load today. I'll let you know how things worked out.

Re: Acceleration issues.
Seems like everything is all sorted out. I finally had a chance to take it out for a couple of hours today and it ran flawlessly. In fact, I was amazed at how beautiful it ran and if you've never had your injectors properly cleaned & serviced, I'd highly recommend it and make sure you take the time to have a look at the inside of your fuel tank to see if there are any signs of rust or scaling. It's a quick way to ruin a lot of fun. What blast to drive now that the whole fuel system is running clean and clear.
Thanks again for all the tips & suggestions.

Re: Acceleration issues.
These are the identical symptoms I'm having in my 1980 Spider 2000. It had old fuel in it when we purchased it, and eventually before we had it on the road the fuel pump died. We replaced the fuel pump and filter and some hardware that was missing (had wrong type of fuel filter). I then syphoned out about 3 gallons of old fuel and put some Stabil in there and syphoned it out. It was clear, so I didn't think I needed to go any further. After we did the timing belt, cambox gasket, and front hub it was on the road. It stutters/misses on acceleration after it warms up. If I stop it the symptom goes away briefly or maybe until I get home, usually only briefly.
Reading this whole thread, I probably need to check the newish fuel pump. It may explain why the other one failed and why the current pump is so loud. I'm thinking a full flush of the tank, lines and injectors may be in order.
Thanks for all the great info in this thread, I'll let you know if this resolves it. It may take some time as this is a hobby car not a daily driver and it's 19 degrees right now!
