Mechanical and Electronic Fuel Pump?

Post by kev »

I have a carbed 1980 that had a leaky mechanical fuel pump when I first bought it. I put a new one on and it always worked fine. I am rebuilding the car now and was wondering why I have an electronic fuel pump as well? Should I have both?

Looks like a PO added this on as the fuel line is newer with new hose clamps.

Disconnect one. Fiat put an electric on my 79 under warranty and left the mechanical on but took the fuel lines and connected them together at the fuel pump to take it out of the system.

Actually it won't hurt anything to have both pumps. The gas will flow right trough either of them even if they are not working. A friend has this same setup, with the electric fuel pump on a pushbottom. When he has not driven the car for a long time and fuel has drained out of the carb he pushes the button and lets the electric pump fill the carb. The he starts the car and the mechanical pump takes over.
