OK, I'm ordering a couple of wheel adapters and if they work appropriately then I'll get the second pair. Free shipping, so I'm not worried about breaking the order into two parts.
I have a question, before I do it, though. If my memory serves me well, there is a pin on my current hub, is that safe to cut off? I'm getting a 4x98 to 4x100 adapter that is 1" thick, so that should place me just about as close as I am now, and a little bit outward for the outside edge because of the wider tires.
Does this sounds doable? I fully understand the stress involved in messing with the geometry of anything back there, but feel that I am minimizing it by getting the sizes that I'm getting. I really just want to know what to do with that pin for now. If I'm going to have to do anything major with these adaptors (like get a hole machined for that pin) I might have to hold off buying them.

I am not sure what pin your talking of. Are you talking about the two screw-on pins that hold the spacer on the hub and allow you to put the wheel on so it is centered for the bolt holes?
That is not needed for your current plans, but will make putting on the wheel a little more difficult as you will have to hold the wheel in place as you inset the bolts for the wheels. I would like to see some pictures of these and your opinion when you get them.

ok, thanks, they are screw in? I didn't remember that. Going by memory can be a dangerous thing for me. Finding the hole won't be a problem because this adaptor will mount with the current bolts and then the wheel will mount with your standard lug and lug nut. so taking off a wheel will be a breeze and aligning holes won't be an issue any more.
Besides, I'll have 12lb (maybe less, I can't remember) Konig Helium wheels on it, and they are so light I could hold em all day with one hand if I had to!

won't your 12lb wheels have tires on them? or are you just going to run on the rims?

C'mon mark. i'm not stupid. There will be a protective layer of duct tape on the rim bead. Also serves for increased traction.

I didn't suggest you were stupid! I thought maybe since you had helium wheels that the car would be floating just off of the ground

I just put a new set of Michelins on my S10 and the guy at the tire store asked me if I wanted to pay $10 more per tire for nitrogen, which he highly recommended. I asked him what the benefit was and he said nitrogen had no moisture vs compressed air so the wheel would be protected from rust. I told him that was a stupid upsell on his part since my truck has alloys. Heck, even my 35 year old steel Fiat rims haven't rusted. I don't see any reason for it.

From what I've heard is that nitrogen has larger molecules and your tires stay at the proper inflation rate for many months vs. air. $10 a tire is ridiculous.

We put clean (oil free) nitrogen in aircraft tires, because it is less succeptable to temperature and pressure at high altitude... since my spider doesn't see snow, and can't fly (yet anyway!) I don't really see the need.

The air we breathe is 78 percent nitrogen, 21 percent oxygen and 1 percent other gasses.
They would have to fill the tire in a vacuum chamber to remove the 21 percent of oxygen already in the tire before presurization.
For $10 per tire I'll come over and fill your tires with natural methane. It's a proprietary filling nozzle so don't ask.

Dano are you getting the adapters so they are hubcentric for the rims. I have some that are hubcentric to the hub on the front of my car and hubcentric to the rim. The rears don't need to be as there is no hub for the adapter to sit on but the rears on my car are still hubcentric to the rim. They work great no unbalance feeling at all.

it's funny that you mention this because right after I ordered them I was outside looking at my rims. I have these super hard plastic hub-centric adapters that I had when the wheels were on the Aerio, but I didn't even THINK about it for the fiat!!! We'll see what I get in the mail, but I imagine this will be something I need to work out. I'll double check my supplier's website to see if they mention whether or not the adapters are hub-centric or lug-centric.
