CS1 difference between USA end EU engine block
CS1 difference between USA end EU engine block
Can someone please explain to me the difference in the two 1756cc engine blocks.
Better still if you have a pic that could clarify to me the difference between the European and the USA version of the 1756cc engine block.
Thank you.

No it's not. There is at least one difference under the hole where the oil filter goes...and maybe more.

i was speeking internally, there are a few variants of the block with ears that are cast on or bolt holes that are machined and even where the oil filter mounts some are 4 bolt some are 6 bolt, but they are the same internally dimentionally. if you want a specific exact match, show me the block you are looking for and i will tell you what year car it was used in the usa

Start with the numbers and go from there.

The list is not complete, but it's a good starting point.

Re: CS1 difference between USA end EU engine block
Do you mean just the block itself, or 'shortblock', as in the entire lower half of the engine with pistons, rods, crank, etc?
Even in the US there were differences. The main one was when they changed the crank/crank pulley/alternator configuration. Also later 131s with air conditioning had two extra mounting holes under the oil filter block. But it is actually rare to find a 1800 like that, more common on 2000s.
Of course the engine type number stamped into the block was different, as these engines had emissions equipment.

Re: CS1 difference between USA end EU engine block
I wanted to make some sense in the differences of the shortblocks between there versions:
132A1.040.4
132A1.040.5
and the european
132 AC1 000.
Then there is also the 131A1.040 that i'm not even sure was used on the spider but I read it somewhere.

>I wanted to make some sense in the differences of the shortblocks between there versions:
132A1.040.4
132A1.040.5
The '040' means the engine has 49 state emissions equipment. '031' would mean California spec emissions equipment.
This emission equipment included lowered compression ratio, Exhaust gas recirculation, and Air injection. In California it also meant a catalytic converter.
The '040.4' was the 1974 1756cc engine with a 34DMSA carburetor and two outlet exhaust manifold. The '040.5' was the 1975 to early 1977 with 32ADFA carburetor and single outlet exhaust manifold.
So this 'engine type' number do not strictly refer to the engine block, but the entire engine.

What was the difference between the .023 and the Euro (.000) engines?
Thanks,

Re: CS1 difference between USA end EU engine block
Trying to wake up this old thread again and hope for some help!
I just got my very first 1800 Spider and have so many questions - like: What did I buy?
My car is a 1974 CS1 from the US, but imported to Sweden (where I live, btw) a few years back. No documentation.
The engine should have been a 132 A1.040.4 according to the type plate.
But over the oil filter, I read the numbers 132 AC1.000, 156045. Probably a block from a European CS1, or was it used in other FIAT models too?
The carburetor is a Solex C34 EIES, which, from what I can understand was used in some European CS1?
But now it gets confusing - the cylinder head casting is FF 132 CB 1A.0 4371507 from a LANCIA! As it seems to a head from a 2L engine, I doubt this is the original head, but I have not been able to find out what the original head for the AC1.000 should have been? Does anyone know? Inlet manifold seems like a single plane. The exhaust is 4-2-1.
From what I have read, the bore and stroke are the same in the A1.040.4 and the AC1.000, but the compression ratio differs.
How did FIAT lower the compression ratio in the CS1 for the US market? Did they fit other pistons? Or did the increase the volume in the cylinder head? If my short block had the specified 9.8:1 compression ratio with the original head, my engine should still have a decent compression ratio even if the head comes from a 2L engine with the slightly larger chambers?
I have some pictures, but I have not been able figure out how to upload them.... When I click "Img" button, i only get: .
How does my CS1 run? I actually runs great! Plenty of torque from low rev and great sound from both the carb and the exhaust.
I does not always start, but there is lots of information on this topic in this forum, so I'm pretty convinced I will get that sorted out.
