Need advice on Hagerty Insurance and Canadian Laws

Post by 4uall »

Came home after work to find a hand written note from a 15 yr old kid who had crashed his bike into the back of Fiona (which was parked on the street). Trunk is gouged, back drivers side fender is gouged and drivers rubber bumper piece has been torn. How the hell does this happen? I am going to be calling him tomorrow with the anticipation of having a sit down with his parents etc. My two questions are as follows: are the parents legally obligated to pay for their childs damage, as I may have to make a claim has anyone ( Canadian) made this type of claim?

Any and all comments greatly appreciated in advance.
Jay

That sucks! Sorry I can't give any advice, never came across this type of incident before. Maybe give your insurance broker a call before you contact the parents so you know where you stand. I am impressed that the 15 year old kid left you a note. A lot of adults wouldn't!!

In BC that would be covered by my comprehensive insurance; I'd only need to pay the deductable of $300. And, making a claim would not affect my policy in any way.

Right, Jim - if you have your comprehensive insurance with ICBC. Sounds like Jay has his with Hagerty (as do I) but my assumption would be that this kind of damage would be covered by comprehensive anyway.

Jay, sorry to hear about Fiona.
I know what it's like to drive around in a damaged car, having just gone through that myself with Angelina. Not pleasant.
I am surprised the kid left a note, smart on one hand but also a bit of an idiot to run into a parked classic!
I would try the parents with an estimate and if that doesn't work I would then call my insurance.
Keeping Joe at Milano's busy aren't we?
Good luck.
