i've read through dozens of old posts mentioning the fix, but i haven't come one that tells exactly what needs to be done (or better yet, shows it). thanks.

Here goes. ( and please feel free to chime in if you feel I'm going astray). Older cars just have the battery cable rounding from the positive terminal of the battery to the starter and then depending on the year from the positive terminal to the alternator directly. And then again depending on year from the starter and or alternator to the ignition switch. At some point fiat figured out the weakness of the system and added the " brown wire". Moulded into the positive battery post connection. The brown wire fix is just that. Add a wire to the positive battery terminal.
