fuel pump questions: updated

Post by btoran »

at some point in my car's past, an on/off toggle switch for the fuel pump was added. the switch sits below the dash under the toggle switch for the lights. the fuel pump is located in the trunk near the gas tank.

1. what is the factory setup for the fuel pump? is it located in the trunk or under the hood?
2. is the fuel pump usually wired to the ignition switch?
3. what would be the reason for installing a setup like mine? the only thing i can think of is that you could start the car and then turn off the fuel pump so the carb is fully drained for the winter.

I put one in my car as a simple theft deterent. You wont get very far with the fuel switch off. I know, tested it a few time by mistake.

factory location is in the trunk.
The fuel pump is fired by a speciat relay which operates when the starter in on, then when oil pressure is high.
When the carb is totally empty, I fire the pump with a direct wire that I plug on the + of the coil, when ignition switch is on, until the carb is full. Prior to this I unplug normal wire from the pump.
Then I go back to normal wiring. (I don't know if this is clear).
This way I do not weaken the battery with the starter running while the carb is empty.

thanks. my fuel pump is in the trunk but isn't attached to anything as you can see in this picture.

Image

it looks like it should go on two of the mounting posts on the vertical wall under the battery but it can't fit there because the hoses wold be oriented up and down and there isn't enough space to the floor of the truck.

so, do i have the wrong pump? where is the fuel pump supposed to attach to?

if the fuel pump is only supposed to be on when the starter is on, what is the effect of leaving it running the whole time the car is on?
