Front air dam?
Front air dam?
Does anyone know if the front lower air dam on Spiders was standard on 82 Spiders? I never had a late model one before and my 82 does not have one on it now but I was wondering if it should have one?

Re: Front air dam?
I'm pretty sure they were standard on all big bumper spiders... atleast 79' and up.
I highly recommend the fiberglass one Mark sells!

Gunsmith, I was told by "a reliable source" that they were on virtually all late model Spiders originally. I had asked because I see the mounting holes for one on my '82. I'm thinking of putting one on it.

Thanks guys it is as I expected. Why are there so many with out them then? Do they come off when you park them over a parking stop or speed bump, they don't look that low? I would assume anything Mark sells is good so I will go with that one.

They are fairly brittle plastic that rides really low to the ground. They hit curbs and parking lot bumpers really easily...and break just as easily. Many just don't survive. The other part that never seems to make it is the splash guard beneath the motor on the newer Spiders. I changed my oil one time on my 81 and decided it should come off. It make oil changes a pain.

right. between the chin spoiler and the belly pan....bolting and unbolting them just to get at the oil filter became a real hassle for a lot of guys.spidernut wrote:They are fairly brittle plastic that rides really low to the ground. not putting them back on seemed to be the thing to do after a fashion.
that is why i use a remote oil filter kit.

Oh great. My father-in-law just made me a stainless steel belly pan for my 72. I'd be in big trouble if I let it sit in the garage after an oil change.

Re: Front air dam?
stainless? Wow!
I saw a design that I hope to copy someday. Jim Fierst actually put a trap door in his belly pan so he could get at the filter w/out removing the pan. unfortunately, the picture was very poor quality....but the idea will just not go away.
I have a spare belly pan around here somewhere. Someday, i will fab up this concept.

Re: Front air dam?
I took advantage of Mark's sale ,and bought a chin spoiler for my car.Ordered on Fri.,on my doorstep Mon. morning! Nice fiberglass unit and the fit was excellent.Mark said the valance is rarely straight and mine wasnt.I went to Home Depot and bought a tube of black silicone caulk.Blends in perfect ,can't even see a seam, and being silicone it will come off easy if I need to pull it.Thanks Mark. Here is a pic.

Thanks ,Pope my problem is I like to drive it so much it interferes with working on it! I do have it mechanically where I want it though.

That is a very nice car! Hopefully you'll bring up to NC for an event so I can see it in person.

Re: Front air dam?
Denise ,I have been in the market for a trailer ,but with business being slow the search has cooled a little.I was telling my wife this evening that I am jealous of all of you who live near other owners and enthusiasts.I will try make some events your way this year, especially if I find a reasonably priced car trailer.I have a buddy who will loan me his,and I am going to use it for FFO,but I dont like to impose on him too often.Have fun at the rally this weekend!!
