Really hope that Fiat figured out a more effective rust proofing technique for the 500. All that salt water makes me nervous.

Although the current US Fiat 500's are made in Mexico and likely make their way to the states via freight train, the ad referenced speaks volumes to how the original 500's and 124 spiders were imported, which if there are folks around who remember the rusting problems with the originals would have a good laugh and would not inspire new car sales.
I have a stock period photo saved somewhere that shows the a whole fleet of multicolored Fiat 124 spiders tied down to the top deck of a large ship. The cars were not covered, and endured the corrosive salt spray of the ocean for the entire durration of their journey from Italy to the States. When they arrived, the dealers simply washed the bodies, paying little if no attention to washing off the salt from the undercarriage. Upon sale: "How about simonizing the undercarriage, sir?" The dealers effectively locked in the salt, ensuring the cars would rust out from under your feet...literally!
